With an affectation for , and a humble appreciation of (academically unstructured) , Middle English romances and English / Scottish popular ballads , and as it'll be "awhile" before I hear any millenium old roving minstrels , I'll thankfully echo the two year old shout of "coombsm" and the near-year old comments of Prospero_again ... "... it's perfection" . I've read "Willie O Winsbury" (not all seven versions) , but somehow managed to miss the contemporary audio rendition . Despite the olde lexicon / vernacular , Janet , Willie , and the soft ending sound somehow familiar . Any help appreciated . And yeah , I'm pleasantly fixed on Fairport's "Liege and Lief" , and in a haunting sort of way I'm very hard-pressed to find an equal to Sandy's vocals on same !

Actually, it is perfect! The playing is wonderful, as is the singing, and it's a beautiful song too. But if you take into account how it fits into place to complete side 1 of Liege & Lief, following the drama of Matty Groves with quiet reflective sadness...it's perfection.

Off-key I-Am-A-Girl?? Shirley, you jest. Even if it is, it's just a representation of the frailty and imperfection of humanity, but the sound is a representation of what humanity can achieve. Etc

I would like to hear Richard Thompson sing this one. He wrote the song, but I never heard him perform it.
