FAKE TYPE. is a music duo unit based in Tokyo with rapper TOPHAMHAT-KYO (AO) and trackmaker DYES IWASAKI.
DYES creates the catchy and melodious tracks, and AO sings the poppy and tricky rap. They incorporate a wide range of genres, such as: Pop, Electro Swing, Hip-Hop, Drum&Bass, Dubstep, etc.
They formed in August 2013, and released the music video for "FAKE STYLE" featuring two characters based off themselves. They released their first full album "FAKE BOX" in 2014. Notably, one of the tracks, "Nightmare Parade", became popular in an "animation meme", and gave the duo a burst of popularity with fans outside of Japan.
On April 21, 2017, FAKE TYPE. announced that they will suspend activities and go into an indefinite hiatus.
During hiatus, AO focused on releasing more of his solo albums, and within those, FAKE TYPE. released AKUMA DRIVE, Princess♂, and Mister Jewel Box.
AO released the music video for "Princess♂" in 2019, depicting a demon character which gained an even larger burst in popularity with millions of views after overseas fans shared the video onto Tik Tok. He then released the music video for "Mister Jewel Box" in 2020, a direct sequel that more or less reflects his real-world feelings on Princess♂'s popularity.
On September 30, 2020, FAKE TYPE. announced their return with a Rebirth live show planned for March, but it was postponed due to the pandemic.
Support members include guitarist Johngarabushi, MV producer group PPP, album illustrator koma, and MV producer/illustrator DEMONDICE.
