'Grace Under Pressure' is the 10th track on Elbow's 2nd album 'Cast of Thousands', and is highly regarded and much loved by fans and critics alike. The song consists of one verse and one chord sequence repeated for the first 4 minutes of the song, before the chanting mantra of "We still believe in love so fuck you" comes in at the end; recorded by the band at Glastonbury in 2002 and sampled on to the album track. The song is often described as an anthem, hopeful, feel-good, uplifting, happy, joyful and extraordinary - all of which are totally legitimate. Elbow seem to have created a simplistic wonder by producing perhaps the most emotional song of all time. The content cannot be left to speak for this though, the music is the primary contributor. The astonishing and breathtaking usage of the big gospel choir, the beautiful strings, the thumping-mad drums, the driving piano and organ, Guy's soft vocals, the sweet guitar part and of course the guest appearance of bassist, singer and friend from Doves - Jimi Goodwin, providing extra vocals to the classic sing-along tune. Elbow, however have often dismissed two assumptions about the song. 1. Feel-good music. Guy particularly state his loath of the label 'Feel-good', and much prefers, happy or joyful. 2. Sing-along. They have stated that it is indeed not a sing-along - because of the whole kareoke nature attached to that genre - but a "we're in this together" type feeling, a "you and me against the world" feeling. Overall, 'Grace Under Pressure' is a highlight of the band's career, ending up as an often used finishing song to their much approved gigs, and a personal favourite of the band.
