War, friend only to the undertaker. Ooooh, war. This is such a classic song! I honestly think this is a tad better than Burzum's War (duh I know Burzum didn't cover Edwin Starr's War).

Did you know the original title for 'War and Peace' was 'War—What Is It Good For?'

This is a protest song about the Vietnam war, although it makes a broader statement of the need for harmony in our everyday lives. This was one of the first Motown songs to make a political statement. The label had always been focused on making hit songs, but around this time Motown artists like The Temptations and Marvin Gaye started releasing songs with social commentary, many of which were written by Whitfield. http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=1029

I'm sure Richard M. Nixon hated this song, not only because it's a anti war song but because it's a song done by a black person...lol

This song struck a nerve in 1970 during the Vietnam war. The fact it was so popular shows how unpopular the war was!
