I don't always agree with his politics, but he definitely has a captivating personality. I'd love to hear him on Bill Burr's podcast one day.

You can't afford to get all loosey-goosey down in your ass pussy - not in this economy.

Hilarious guy. If you never ever got the chance to ever see George Carlin live, I highly recommend you go to a Doug Stanhope show. Call yourself a fan? You are missing out if you have never seen him live. He puts on the best show out of any comedian alive right now on this planet.

Wonder if Stanhope has checked his last.fm shoutbox to see his "fans" arguing about his similarities/dissimilarities to Bill Hicks. And cringed.

So yes, Stanhope has lasting honesty while Hicks has the unbeding passion while he should have read more on what he "preached" - Stanhope admits that he is what he is, a drunk dumb person with a dozen difficult words in his brain and loads of spine and simple truthfulness without any pretensions. That is more revolutionary in today's world than saying shrooms open your mind and the government lies.

Hicks ages lousy, Stanhope lasts. Hicks' idealism melts into an overall liberal mentality of simpledon hippyidom - an idealistic idea of shrooms that doesn't relate to the actual world and no government should care/worry if their citizens do shrooms or not because the country will not become more humane or anti-control. The wars would be supported by shroomers as much as by smokers. There is very little that is "prophetic" about Hicks (because this is what he is so highly regarded for). His drug talk is what every other hippie has said since 1962 and his non-ideological jokes are quite average (his school talk and eye poking are mediocre at best), his political jokes are not opening any eyes, this was all public information and even if you didn't believe it, it wasn't a mind bender - the gulf war bit was not revolutionary. What counted was his PASSION and that is it. A sane person can't regard him a "Chomsky with dick jokes" because there isn't the erudition to support that.

Both Stanhope and Hicks are great men.. Regarding the whole drug discussion. Stanhope is basicaly of the same opinion as Hicks were, on how some drugs can help expand your mind and make you realise stuff you havent notied before.. I myself have had experiences with psychedelic drugs, and yes it was an eye-opening experience in most cases. No matter how pretentious that may sound to some of you.. BTw whats wrong about being lowbrow?

I'm just being facetious when I say that so bluntly (obviously there's no such thing as "better"), but I do prefer Stanhope by a mile. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate that Hicks was like a pre-Stanhope Stanhope and was a pioneer for more abrasive and intelligent comedy (in the same way as Lenny Bruce and George Carlin) and when he was on top he was fantastic ("Pro-life" for instance.) But all of the New Age-y, pseudo-philosophical stuff just comes off as really corny. The fact that he constantly talks about how philosophical and nonconformist he is and that everyone needs to catch up to him is a bit presumptuous, especially when his "deep" and "philosophical" non-joke rants amount to the same New Age drug-babble you hear from pothead teenagers at every college campus in America. The third eye catch phrase thing is vomit-inducing. And a lot of the shouting and funny noises he makes are quite lowbrow. He's got great material, it's just marred by the "I did drugs once, I'm deep" stuff.

Come on now! Stanhope is in his 40's. Hicks died at 32, not fair to compare them... Stanhope makes me laugh harder than any other Stand-Up (Yes even more than Greg Propps and Todd Barry), but there was something very unique and cathartic about Hicks way of approaching stand-up, which no other Comedian even gets near in my book! Rant in E-Minor in particular

i think (if this indeed what you are implying) that him killing himself on stage to end his career would maybe tickle a morbid fantasy for him, but that the idea of actually doing that is pretty damn insane and he would never do it

I'm already looking forward for the new album, he has been talking a lot about a great shocking closer, also the name of his latest album and attacking the public being the ultimate taboo in comedy; i think he has given away a lot of clues, or may be i am just being over analytic.

The new cd is basically the same as the Art is pointless bootleg... Oh well, I guess that's what you get for being impatient. By the way, the anti-Keynesian, salad-tossing hooker bit sounds much better on the bootleg.
