I think this is one of the greatest songs of all time. It's so perfect for what it is.

The day the music died... This song was a homage to Buddy Holly who died ways too young at age 22. Don loved his music that much when he still was very young himself, and the day Buddy died Don felt like the music had died.

Yeah, thanks for pointing this out. It also startled me when I knew about this tragedy. The plane crash killed several talented musicians: Buddy Holly (22 years old), Ritchie Valens (17 years old), and The Big Bopper (28 years old). It is very sad when great people die untimely, especially at such a young age. But... these guys at least managed to find their way: in music. Most people die without revealing their true abilities, without getting to know their talents. Who knows how many such Buddy Holly we have lost without even knowing it? This is imho really sorrowful and frightening.

What a classic! Some of the most memorable and profound lyrics in the popular music canon.

The not-subtle-at-all dismissal/condemnation of The Stones and the phenomenal era of rock that was coming pisses me off to no end, but there's no denying the magnificence of this song.

"Helter skelter in a summer swelter ./ The birds flew off with a fallout shelter. / Eight miles high and falling fast...." You said er sang a mouthful there, Don. Those lines still get me above all.
