@hjbardenhagen: when it comes to Eyes Wide Shut: its a different instrumentation in the movie-soundtrack. Weißt du vielleicht, welche aufnahme im Soundtrack genutzt wird? Diese fier finde ich nicht so prägnant und geheimnisvoll..

A deleted user already mentioned that this piece of music is used for the soundtrack of the movie "Eyes wide shut" after a novella from Arthur Schnitzler with Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise, being the last movie that Stanley Kubrick directed. Everybody who saw the movie seems to search the internet what waltz they heard, so now you know. ;-)

This may have been written in Communist Russia, but I can't help but feel as though it was meant for a Tsarist ball. . .

It is impossible to hear this waltz without being mentally transported to an elegant ball in the grandest setting imaginable. In my mind's eye it is a huge hall with spotless white marble floors, two breathtaking golden curved staircases ascending the walls, chandeliers that make the one in the "Phantom of the opera" look like a bare 40 watt bulb... Beautiful people dancing flawlessly in the finest formal attire ever sewn, while even the servants outfits would turn Marie Antoinette green with envy.

The trombone part reminds me of the great, but scarcely known russian movie " It's still quiet in the dawn" by Rostozki - a very tragic film. . .

I bet if you played this to a novice, they wouldnt be able to tell you it was written by Shostakovich...compare this to his 5th Symphony and you'll see what I mean.
