Man, that was good. You're a funny guy, Mr. Saetiah. Even stole my "they all got killed in a tour bus accident" joke. Pass it along, it's a good joke. It's not like I invented it anyway. Do you have a blog or some place where you dump all this schizo babble? I could read this shit all day. (Schizo. Good band btw. Check em out.)

Grave New World is actually quite cool. I even like the vocals! Not their best, of course. I love Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing the most!

It is quite a cool heavy metal album (it's not glam either). It's not 1986 anymore, pretending it's bad doesn't give you any punk points

A bit upsetting to see Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing dominating the top tracks. An amazing record but admittedly not their best work. Love how raw Why is

I'm not even a fan of the style, but this band despite listening a little gives me a great energy.

Some people complaining Discharge's music is too minimalist and formulaic, but these people obviously miss the point of this kind of music. There is no fun, it's not intended to deliver fancy and catchy melodies. It's just here to grind your ears with crushing riffs and cold bleak atmosphere for you to realize you're gonna die burning in the fires of nuclear apocalypse. Discharge and their later d-beat followers nailed it with their laconic and in-your-face music approach.

sounds much better when you're sewing patches onto your garbage tier stinky ass jeans jacket with them as background noise

HNSNSN definitely is the ultimate metalpunk record. The sheer rage these guys had on this record is plain incredible, you can't rivalize such power and anger, still to this day, this album remains relevant. I'm quite glad they disbanded after the Never Again 1984 Comp ! ...

End of Days is an insanely good come back album, cant believe this guys come up with such a powerful piece after influencing the whole extreme music genre and fade away by making many lame albums , you should nuke the shit out of yourself if you dont listen this album. It gives me hope that people still can do good music after 40 years of their foundation

I totally forgot about the "crossover" era of Discharge until recently lol. Gotta check it out sometime.

Why and Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing rock mercilessly. There isn't much from that time period ('81-'82) that even comes close to the blood-pumping ass-whipping face-blasting ruckus these guys kicked up on those two records. They aren't really where you look for musical diversity or sophistication. That's not really the point. The point is having your dick knocked in the dirt by their awesome riffs.

I understand that this group is legendary for more or less starting the ide abehind crossover thrash, but it seems like they just lazily shout the song title over and over in the songs I've heard. I really don't get their appeal when bands like Suicidal Tendencies have much more actual progressions and bitingly satirical lyrics, is this band mostly enjoyed by music historians?

Not crossover thrash, these guys are basically the embryonic stage for more or less every single extreme metal genre and much of what's considered hardcore punk today. Also the lyrics are supposed to be anthemic, like a call to arms, which is the point. Discharge's main appeal is their music anyway. People don't care about progression that much, they just like how Discharge sounds more. For their time they were extremely hectic, powerful and unique, and even today their music still rips more asses than any Pig Destroyer wannabe D-crustgrindviolencewhatever could ever hope to.

Fair enough, maybe they just sound a bit uninteresting to me because of how many groups they inspired. I can definitely see how they can sound anthemic. I learned about them through Metallica's covers collection, and while the tones were sufficiently meaty, the way the tracks were composed didn't really leave any impact on me past the first 15 seconds or so. Interesting that they're that influential, thanks for helping me understand their renown.

Their music doesn't hold up if you just look at the compositions, but honestly I don't really listen to metal let alone hardcore for that sort of thing. By all means they can try (And there are certainly bands that have succeeded in making genuinely creative music while remaining as crushing and fun as any), but this sort of music doesn't lend itself for that type of thing, certainly not now that I listen to classical music so much, so most musicians who try it just sound vapid and overblown to my ears. While I don't think a lot of metalheads have the same classical background that I have, I do think we agree that RIFFS and crushing sounds are overall the priority when it comes to this sort of music, and composition skills secondary. In that sense Discharge sound as fresh and actually "hardcore" as any band today, while their no-nonsense approach gives them a lasting charm that most pompous overblown "experimental" metal bands can't hope to have.

Oh, and there's also some context involved regarding how this became so influential. It was made during the early 80's - By this point west/east relations were at an all time low and nuclear war was thought to be inevitable. Discharge were a fine snapshot of the kind of veinbursting anxiety that people, especially angry energetic younglins who thought destiny had fucked them over and thrown them into a world before they could fully bloom, were feeling at the time. Discharge provided the escapism punks and metal fans were hoping to find, they gave that desperation and fear apocalyptic landscapes a voice.

Honestly, I kinda feel that way regarding wealth stratification, and bands like Enter Shikari help me cope with that. That context certainly helps!
