Here is the proof that time is relative: fourteen minutes go by in a flash. Absolutely perfect.

Mark could be forgiven if he ever decided to just do a 30 minute version of this with a whole jam featuring his band now

Knopfler talked before about early lyrics being an attempt to bring the specific part of England he was from into the kind of musical vernacular of the blues that largely worked from those specific areas of particularly the south and later Chicago, all the way through Memphis, Detroit and New York City. He wrote the song about America but it’s all of those influences, but also playing into just how good the band was. This really doesn’t broach the subject of progressive rock but all of the great bands have moments like these before the true moment of glory, where the quality control goes beyond the requirements of having hit songs. He already had a few of those. He was reaching for something totally inward, and this is typified by the fact he is seemingly never too far from having a guitar in his hands. It’s the mix of compulsion and discipline he had that really gives this song and all of his music it’s charm.

Oh damn, more than 8 years ago I listened to it - I think it's time I listened to this again! Thanks for the information - I definitely agree about that, I can name a few examples of how a non-prog rock band ventured a little bit into that territory, such as Boston - Foreplay/Long time, Led Zeppelin with Achilles Last Stand, Kashmir and to an extent Stairway to heaven; Queen - The March of the Black Queen, Innuendo; The Who - pretty much the whole of Quadrophenia album. And many others, although I would still put this as prog-related, in my opinion songs like this are worth checking out for any fan of progressive rock music.

Великолепная классика, близкая к прогу 70-х, но в тоже время впитавшая в себя дух десятилетия, в которое песня была написана.

"When all the birds up on the wires and the telegraph poles, they can always fly away from this rain and this cold" Superb lyrics!
