Your Dad was right about this band. Mark Knopfler is one of the more underrated guitarists, Telegraph Road is so powerful

The weirdest thing happened to me the other day! Been playing money for nothing for a bit and got myself a blister on my index finger. Needless to say it left me very confused and questioning Marks knowledge of anatomy. Brilliant guitarist nonetheless.

My father has one of their songs as a ringtone. Dad music for sure, but I kind of digging it too.

why ''Dad music''? why this ''age'' stereotype everywhere even in listening music? listening music doesn't require age nor it is divided by age. this band can listen nowadays kids as much as generations who were listening to it at the time band was active. Same with any kind of music - what matters is THE QUALITY, MESSAGE and the VIBE. If those 3 requirements are satisfied, no matter who is, can listen any music be it dating from 1st century in a common era or from 2022.

personally for me it is dad music, because my dad listens to it, but in general you are right and I completely agree with u. Music is for people by people.

Making movies is my favorite album by them. love this band to death but I wish they had merch that looked good: https://www.direstraits.com/shop/ is sad. Also, if anyone knows why they leave d and s lowercased I'm honestly curious why that happened, and I can't find anything on it.

knopfler simply doesn't give a shit about marketing, which is honestly one of the things that makes dire straits so great. he just wrote good songs and had good production, but he didnt want to tour more than he could take, didnt push reunions and barely did any remasters. it's the golden standard of how to run a legacy band like theirs, all of the other 80's bands could learn something from them. also their merch looks fine, its just straight forward stuff, which is right up their alley and fits with all their marketing in general, its not like their albums covers are flashy or super well thought out either. the music simply speaks for it self, same goes for knopfler's solos stuff

yes the music absolutely speaks for itself I am a major fan. I’m very happy they didn’t put marketing, touring or anything over the music quality and they never compromised their values. I think the shirts could still look a little better but to each their own. I would absolutely still wear it!

I'm not sure what to make of this band. On one hand, the performances are always, although well played, lacking in energy, which is especially required for rocking. The aesthetics and lyrical content are a bit dull, too. But on the other hand, I also return for more listens. Who knew a band severely deficit in spunk and pizzazz could be so captivating...

hmmm idk if I agree with the second part, what you said about lyrical content. I think their lyrics can be simple but not dull. a song like Romeo & Juliet for example tells a simple story but the lyrics are passionate and fitting, and full of imagery. IMO their music videos are the worst thing about this band, that and their merchandise which almost always looks crappy.

You know what? I listened to it again and I agree it’s a great song. It’s only the chorus that I don’t like. But if I were to rank the tracks, from my most to least favorite, it’d be this: 1. Tunnel of Love 2. Hand in Hand 3. Romeo and Juliet 4. Expresso Love 5. Skateaway 6. Les Boys 7. Solid Rock I know you didn’t ask but I wanted an excuse to do it anyway. Feel free to rank yours if you want.

I think their dullness and effortlessness are intentional (even if they are super virtuoso), same as their careless lyrics (most of the time). I would recommend to you to check some live performances, especially the Alchemy Live album (you can see some videos on Youtube, check Sultans of Swing)

I've never gotten the appeal of this band, and by that I mean the huge appeal. I would love for anyone to explain to me what makes them so special for some people. I think they're a fine band, they're certainly talented and have some good songs. But I find it absolutely astonishing that some people I know in my age (early 20s) like these guys so much. If I would make some sort of comparison to another band, I think they're sort of like a lesser version of Eagles. Not in style or musicianship necessarily, but in terms of actual quality compared to their popularity. I mean, at least Eagles have a classic like Hotel California to their name. What does Dire Straits have? Brothers in Arms? Making Movies? I wouldn't put those albums anyhwere near a greatest albums list of all time, not even one of their decade. And yet, Brothers in Arms for example constantly makes Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums list every time (if that's worth anything these days). Can anyone explain what I'm missing?

Mark's writing acumen distinguishes him from the mass IMO. Just take a closer look to some of his songs, both with Dire Straits and of his solo career. He could tell stories like no one else. Not to mention how almost all the songs of DS were improvised in live concerts and they sounded so pure. It also solidifies Mark as one of the greatest Guitar players. Mark never played the same song in the same way. Just listen to this live Romeo and Juliet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvLzmxOjqVE or Brothers in Arms (My favorite live version) : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PBaaQ9tNdrc

Not that big a Dire Straits fan myself but they do have two of the greatest guitar solo's ever recorded IMO, with Brothers In Arms and then Sultans of Swing. Mark Knopfler has a great touch on the guitar that's for sure.

Mark Knopfler is one of the most expressive Guitarists ever. He is a blues genius without sounding bluesy at all. He is right up there with BB King, Hendrix etc. Idk about his song writing, i do it enjoy it, but his riffs and licks are otherwordly. Id even put him above David Gilmore. He is one of the best Strat Players to do it.

I didn't suggest otherwise. However, it doesn't get much worse than RHCP. They suck.
