Last year I listened to a good amount of Destruction. Enjoyable stuff. I even listened to the bad releases and those were surprisingly even enjoyable.

I'll always love this band but definitely miss Mike Sifringer. Gonna take some time getting used to.

I can't help but wonder how this band was capable of producing some of the greatest riffs in thrash metal history during their early 1984-1986 era and than all of sudden fading into mediocrity. Not to provoke fans of later Destruction, but I can't get into their later material at all, it's nothing more than bland textbook thrash to me, and I suspect it's not just me who was puzzled by this abrupt change.

The reason for the shift in style is because Schmier wrote most of the early Destruction material while for Release From Agony he only contributed lyrics. Starting with the Mad Butcher EP in 1987, Destruction saw a huge line-up change. They hired jazz drummer Olly Kaiser and a 2nd guitarist named Harry Wilkens. Mike Sifringer explained the band's approach to composing the album was very different from before because now they had a drummer who could play more technical songs than the previous one. It was all about progress for him. Schmier would later describe Wilkens as a "scale fetishist" and call his style of composing songs "progressive fiddling". He had been blind to the perils of a change in style and had only seen the improved technical musicianship. Sorry for the lengthy reply but I hope you are a bit less puzzled now :)

Your avatar9 minutes ago Never really got into them, but they're celebrating their 40th anniversary this weekend at the "Baden in Blut 2022" festival, so I'll give them a closer listen

I've been enjoying them lately. They're now my #1 favorite out of the Big Three (NOT Big Four, I do like Tankard, IMO they shouldn't be included) bands of German thrash metal.

The first 4 albums are some of the best Thrash out there, but they should've quit after that IMO.

Yeah and they're not even good after that reunion, every album i've heard sounds the same... :/

I like most albums. I will even give The Least Successful Human Cannonball a chance. Who knows, I might strangely like it. Not their best album, but might be listenable.

Well actually Cracked Brain was already w/o Schmier, and that was still awesome. Then something happened... Idk if some of the reunion albums are good, i've only heard like 2 or 3 of 'em.

Metal Discharge is among the greatest disco metal albums of all time, and supposed metal fans disagreeing with me are wrong & gay.

Even Varg recognizes Destruction as one of the most influential bands from the 80s (and even for his band). The early stuff is so good, even Cracked Brain.

Похоже, что Горбачёв (чёрт с пятном на лысине) сглазил весь немецкий трэш и он с 1987 года превратился в УГ)))

If I was Dave Mustaine. I would keep these guys with me on Gigantour 2. I do like Arch Enemy and Overkill on Gigantour 2. Dave Mustaine needs to go on his retirement tour.

I didn't realize they had such a big discography. I got more of their albums. A real killer thrash metal band!

Maybe but they have the best album out of all of the German Big 4 with Eternal Devastation.

I would give that honor to "Persecution Mania" by Sodom, but those first 3 Destruction albums are fucking amazing.

Persecution Mania is really good too. I'd say Agent Orange or Tapping the Vein are Sodom's best for me.

For those who wants more: I came across a band called Witchtrap, which also sounds like 80's Destruction!

You can throw faeces at me, but I'd say that in 80s it was even good, that Schmier left the band. They made interesting "Cracked Brain" without him, even following eps were promising, "Cannonball" was quite chaotic, though something original was there. There was a feeling, that they were looking for something new (experiments are a cool thing). What's now? The same old thing, like was begun on 2000 and 2001 releases. I'm not here to offend you, I only want to say, that Schmier can be an inhibitor of a band's progress. All the post-00s albums are in the same key with its straightforwardness. Nothing new. The same guitar wankery. Like they've made some formula of making an album and follow the same patterns, like repeat function on a dictaphone. Sometimes even had a feeling that they torture themselves to make a record. Or drink lots of beer. Or they just tired to make something new, even catchy.

Although I enjoy their stuff from the 2000's onwards, I really get your point and to an extent I partially agree with that. "All Hell Breaks Loose" and "The Antichrist" are easily their best releases since Schmier rejoined because there was still some elements from their "Neo-Destruction" stuff on the music, which felt like an actual upgrade on the band's sound. "Metal Discharge" was already a mixed bag for me, but starting with "Inventor of Evil" all records started sounding the same, with very minor differences between them. Also, let's not forget that they released TWO albums of re-recordings. I enjoy their offerings, can't deny that, but I also can't deny that they're following a very predictable formula for more than a decade.

I don't about latest releases of Kreator, though I vividly remember that their 01, 05 and 09 releases and they were quite nice as for me. Kreator also after the bunch of experiments in 90s started something new with good, even fresh start on "Violent Revolution". Also, maybe, Kreator more gifted, than Destruction. Remember their 80s, "Endless pain" with its protoblack sound, "Pleasure to kill" with extremeties almost like in death metal. I don't know, but as for me Destruction were even weak in 80s, if speaking about Kreator, Sodom and Destruction and comparing to those two. Now I can only wish them to make something good, that's all. If I made albums, I wouldn't allow myself to do the same old stuff with the similar formula.
