I think Chucks vocals are what made the band stand out even more. Make fun of them as much as you want.

Pretty great instrumentally but I keep imagining that they got some guy's grandma to do vocals lmao

I love Death and I've tried so many times to get into this alb but I just cant. Some great songs on here, but as an album... not as good as the 3 previous projects. Kind of a slog to listen to and just doesn't really stick with me

The culmination of all their progress as a band. Quite a shame that this turned out to be the last album they'd ever release. Would've been difficult to top this and Symbolic either wayt... And it almost didn't happen too! It's still solidified as my favourite. Rest in peace, Chuck. And thank you for all the music you've given us.

Their best album. Only death metal obsessive plebs who can't into prog hate it

This album marks the end of the band as a recording studio outfit and it was intended as a Control Denied work already, but finally Chuck decided that he would do the vocals for the last time, here, too. So we've got this. The lyrics themselves are very strong, as they manage to be grim and strange without crossing into the realm of self-parody; they aren't cheesy or melodramatic at all, something that can't be said for a lot of death metal bands' lyrics. The first five tracks all have a central theme, discussing something that feeds on pain and the suffering of others (this always makes me think of old legends that suggested that you could possess the power of another by consuming them). And then, of course, this is capped off by the amazing Voice of the Soul. Death goes out on the highest note possible though, as this is the best sounding and most technical record, its as progressive as the band gets, and it's great. The Sound of Death 💀

Chuck said all that you wrote about it supposedly being meant and intended for Control Denied wasn't true. He didn't understand the misconception either when he was asked about it.

Simultaneously underrated and overrated. It's nowhere near their worst album, as it is definitely one of their masterpieces. However, I wouldn't call it their best, either; I consider Symbolic, Human, Individual Thought Patterns and (on a good day) Leprosy better.

This album is kinda different than other albums by Death, less Heavy more easy music. I kinda like this album and I feel comfortably with it. It deserves 8/10

My relationship to this album is like a love/hate relationship. First listens after a couple of months of not hearing this make me feel excited again for this album, only to grow tired after listening to it a couple of times in a short span of time.

Seems like it's the current meme to hate on this album, probably because of ANUS. And as always, prog wank kills the dm meathead. Love everything about this, even Chuck's thrashy vocals. Spiritual Healing's boring ass riffs and drumming will always make it the worst on Death's catalog.

Maybe some fans just don't like it? It's by far my least favorite from them. That doesn't make me or anyone else who doesn't like it a "hater" or mean that we're "hating on" it. I love Prog Rock and some Prog Metal and I enjoy Symbolic, but this one has just never clicked for me. I don't like the vocals at all and they are a near fatal flaw, but even beyond those, musically disappoints me. The production/mix is bad, with overly sterile sonics that suck the blood out of the guitars and a weak drum sound, made worse by the fact that there are drum fills seemingly every few seconds and never-ending guitar solos that don't seem to serve a purpose other than to show off; the songs are disjointed and try to get by on technique alone, but there's just not much meat to them. But most people love this and Symbolic as much or more than the rest of Death's material (other than maybe Human), so I don't know why it should bother anyone who likes this that a few random people don't. To each his own.

Worst for old school death metal cavemans, because it's technicality is too high for them.

There's amazingly complex songs on here, but they're excellent. This is one of the first Death albums I ever had. The Painkiller cover is probably my favorite song on this album.

It sounds like Alvin and the Chipmunks being gangraped with industrial equipment before being tossed feet first into a woodchipper.

It's so interesting that the last album of the founders of death metal is actually still pretty progressive.

this is not Death Metal, it's progressive (thrash), but who cares, this album rules like how chuck always ruled.

Death never did wrong, only evolved. Old school Chuck rules. Goblin Chuck rules. TSOP personifies all aspects of the genius of Schuldiner. Human is my personal favorite (but I love all their albums), and this is one hell of a strong album and final offering. Love the tones, especially the drum sound.

GOBLIN CHUCK VOCALS! People hate on the goblin vocals but their awesome. Better then his other vocals on previous albums. People need to embrace the goblin instead of hate on the goblin.
