I'm not a prophet or a stone-age man, just a mortal with the potential of a superman. I'm living on, I'm tethered to the logic of Homo Sapien

There are so many layers to this song. I'm coming down on the side that Bowie isn't talking about literal death in this song; he's talking about ego death - i.e., acceptance of one's true self with all one's flaws as opposed to an idealised conception of oneself. It's no coincidence that Bowie also attacks the idea of black-and-white morality and acknowledges his own dark side here - he's telling us that reality is too complicated to simplify in such a reductionist manner, and thinking of oneself as a flawless hero is simply a case of wishful thinking that prevents acceptance of reality and causes suffering. But there are so many layers here that I'm sure I haven't come close to understanding them all. One of his best songs both lyrically and musically.

I once read that this song, rather than being about Bowie himself, was actually from the point of view of Adolf Hitler as he contemplated suicide. Which blew me away when I read it as I'd never considered that at all, but it seems to fit the lyrics I think.

It was hard to compete against Life on Mars? or The Bewlay Brothers, but this has become my favorite Hunky Dory track in recent times. Bowie's vocal melody and lyrics are perfect.

The demo version of this music is one of the best things that Bowie ever composed.
