As well as Jim Morrison, Bowie has expressed admiration for German composer/playwright Bertold Brecht. To honor him, Bowie composed an own version of Brecht’s Alabama Song (from the 1927 play Mahagonny), some 12 years after The Doors did theirs on their debut album The Doors. Bowie’s version is signified by a complete dis-functional meeting of strange time signatures (transitions in 2/4 or 6/5) and odd notes that are either irregular or out of regular place, making the whole song pretty hard to get a hold of. It was released as a single in 1980 b/w an acoustic version of Space Oddity.
