Conceived in 1994 following a jam session between Bowie and Brian Eno, Outside was to be an epic 2-disc long cyberpunk twinged story but as marketing such a behemoth was difficult it was eventually whittled down to the more digestible size that was ultimately released. The original version of "I Am With White", for example was 22 minutes long.
A trilogy of albums was planned (thus the numerical designation in the album title) but following the mixed reviews of the album it was abandoned (or at least put on indefinite hiatus). The full title was "The Diary of Nathan Adler, or the Ritual Art-Murder of Baby Grace Blue: A non-linear Gothic Drama Hyper-Cycle" with the three parts sub-titled differently. ("1. Outside", "2. Contamination", etc.)
