I was a Junior in HS when this song came out and I FUCKING HATED IT. And then Ladybird happened and WTF Greta Gerwig stop re-wiring my brain! I don't even know who I am now!

After Lady Bird, this song is so important. I absolutely love what they did with it. It's a statement about being who you are and listening to the music you like, even if it's not cool or sexy. I mean the whole movie, but specifically this song. Great.

As dirty and twisted the lyrics may seem to the general public, I think Dave made this song represent lust and that yearning want in a beautiful and poetic sense. Passion was not made to be as the world sees it today - it is supposed to be a thing of beauty.. and this song sums it all up so well.

In my opinion, this song isn't as simple as just being voyeuristic. It's that feeling you have when you want someone but can only look from far away. The power they have over you, mentally and physically. Desire so strong it threatens to take you over sometimes, feeling so lost in them. This song is a lot more than being voyeuristic.
