Why There Are Mountains very much wore its influences on its sleeve; you can hear Pavement, Modest Mouse, and Built to Spill emanating from its billows of guitar howl and feedback. But it was also trying to do its own thing in a way that imbued it with a vitalizing quality which, if you have an affinity for the loud-quiet-loud kind of indie rock tradition it's firmly embedded in, made it a memorable record. There was a time recently when, frustrated in the face of attempts made to change my life falling short, I figured I'd go the route of extirpating the things from my past I strongly identified with. A desperate attempt at shaking something loose in the hope some kind, any kind, of progress could be made. I stopped listening to and watching a lot of the music and films I loved. This record invariably found its way back to me. In a way, its youthful exuberance is more charming and endearing than truly meaningful in the way it once was. A window in a cold, dark forest.

Since it seems very likely we won't be getting any new albums from the band, I just want to say what a great run of albums they had. Would put their discography up against any big indie rock band.

"LOSE" и "Pretty Years" прямо очень хорошие альбомы! Постоянно к ним возвращаюсь, чтобы переслушать.

New songs are great. I wonder if the title 4th of July, Philadelphia (SANDY) is a reference to Alex G who lives in Philly and uses that name for his pages on the internet and CEG are fans of his.

@ZOMG I don't give a fuck. My opinion on the horrible name of that band does not change.

So they are opening for "This Will Destroy You". That has got to be the most pretentious band name I've ever heard. Like, holy-shit-are-you-serious dictionary-definition level pretentious.

Holy! haven't listened to a band this great in a long time, Been listening to so many mediocre bands lately I'm so glad that I've discovered these guys, "Why there are mountains" Is an absolutely incredible album, and there newest album "LOSE" has made its way to the top of my list for AOTY. If you love indie rock, I highly suggest you start listening to these guys!

I like Lose better than WTAM to be honest. It's better as a whole, whereas the first album starts off really strong but then loses me at a lot of parts. I never was able to get into it for some reason.

This band makes me smile with every listen. These are the kind of records kids my age will be swooning over 10 years from now.

kind of a bummer that so much of their promotion for LOSE was shitting on lenses alien. this record was cool to listen to for the sake of something new but got pretty stale after a few listens. i think the 'pop' approach could have easily been accomplished with more songs like jackson and hawk highway. would've also been nice for the acoustic song to be more along the lines of the like blood does outro. all in all, felt like their least honest release, which is obviously weird given its context
