comus actually they are unique, but in those years, the German bands of psychedelic folk, for quality and originality they are at the same level, for esample: Emtidi - Saat (1972) , Hölderlin - 1972 - Hölderlins Traum , Witthüser & Westrupp, Sergius Golowin - Lord Krishna Von Goloka 1973, Bröselmaschine ecc ecc listen to a Brazilian gem of pure beauty Lula Cortês & Zé Ramalho - Paêbirú (1975) p.s. (subjective) the most similar UK band is The Incredible String Band.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Comus. The music is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of experimental music theory most of the songs will go over a typical listener's head.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand outdated copypastas. The humor is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of memeology most of the references will go over a typical LastFM user's head.

There are a lot of people recommending similar things to First Utterance in this shoutbox and they are all wrong. Nothing is close enough to Comus. I've been searching for years as well, but to my knowledge they are still unique and unbeatable.

Spirogyra's St. Radigunds, Jan Dukes de Grey's Mice and Rats in the Loft, Hoelderlin's Hölderlins Traum, Mellow Candle's Swaddling Songs... all great albums worth listening. But, in my opinion, most of them have a remarkable sweetness to their sound that makes them feel quite different, with the exception of Jan Dukes, which sounds like Comus after extensive psychotherapy, as I've seen someone else say. They all lack the unsettling intensity of Comus, I could never find that elsewhere.

Exuma is the closest thing ever came to Comus. It's not acoustic British folk though, because it's Caribbean world music, but it's all about primordial ferocity just like Comus.

I get why people tend to recommend Exuma, but my point is what you mentioned: similarities in approach, but not that much in sound. Same could be said about Paêbirú, I think. I hear some of that "primordial ferocity" in other artists from different genres too, but with very different results because of, well, different genres. I once saw someone compare A Forest of Stars to Comus because of that feeling, and I do agree, but they still have an avant-garde black metal sound and might not be what some fans of Comus are looking for in similar music. That's why I said nothing is close enough, you can find different aspects of their music out there but it will probably still sound very different in one way or another. Of course exploring is definitely worth it, though, and a lot of these artists are great in their own ways.

Why does their whole ~thing~ sound and feel so familiar? It's so odd and improbable seeming that this band even happened at all... and yet at the same time it somehow feels inevitable... like they've tapped into this distinct, very real archetype (or demon?), some wicked ancestral memory tracing way, way back.

There are two records i recommend to all of you. They're not so fucking perfect like First Utterance, but they're stil pretty good and i'm sure you'll dig it. Hoelderlim's Traum by Hoelderlim (german prog/folk with a lot of sad and "pagan" moments, just like Comus) and St. Radigunds by Spirogyra (this one is more "classic" folk but still pretty dark for the time it was released. There is a medieval feeling in the music, as well. Give it a try). If i ever find a another record like First Utterance, i'll post it here :).

Formazione: Roger Wootton - chitarra folk, canto - Glenn Goring - chitarra a 6 e 12 corde, chitarra elettrica, slide, tamburello, canto - Andy Hellaby - basso elettrico, basso fretless, canto - Colin Pearson - violino, viola- Rob Young - flauto, oboe, tamburello - Bobbie Watson - canto, percussioni.._.-._.Hari Om...ॐ

I agree with most of the posters below. Due to my Comus obsession, I have scoured the internet for bands that sound similar to Comus and my conclusion: There is no band like Comus. There are plently of dark, medieval sounding acid folk bands, but nothing approaches the raw intensity of Comus.

Jan Dukes de Grey's Rats And Mice In The Cellar sounds pretty similar to First Utterance.
