This song first appeared on Colin Hay’s 1998 album “Transcendental Highway” but is more well known due to it’s inclusion on the soundtrack of the film “Garden State”, released in 2004. While many listeners assume that the narrator of the song is speaking of getting over a romantic loss, Hay has stated that the narrator in this song is actually pining for the loss of alcohol in his life. Hay had stopped drinking when he wrote this song and he was lamenting the loss of the routine that it had provided him.
