Biography
Chick Graning is an American guitarist, singer and songwriter from Providence, RI, United States. Best known for his work with alternative rock bands, Anastasia Screamed and Scarce, Graning released his début solo album, MT in 2001. He continues to write new music and perform live.
In 1995, when Scarce seemed on its way to big things, tragedy struck: Graning suffered a brain hemorrhage and doctors gave him a 10% chance of survival. Graning did survive. He had to learn how to walk, talk and play guitar again, but recovered spectacularly quickly and returned on the road with Scarce within a year. However, the band's moment had passed, tensions rose and Scarce folded in 1997.
The band's bass player, Joyce Raskin, wrote about the tragic Scarce story in her memoir, 'Aching To Be' (2007). She sent Graning a draft copy prior to publication, which led to Scarce's reforming in 2008. The band still plays occasional live shows and releases new studio material every once in a while.
