I remember in 2008, i was at a BSS gig when Kevin Drew introduced Charles onto stage and asked the crowd to give The Happiness Project a go, and i think he played Mrs Morris.. it didn't go down particularly well at the time (it was about 3/4 of the way into the gig and everyone was getting a bit excitable).

For a similar approach to spoken word in combination with musical themes, listen to Steve Reich's "Different Trains" (1988).

Definitely alters the idea of music and what it can do... eye opening for sure!

after repeated listens, what first seemed clever and fresh now just aggravates. oh well. this is just a much less impressive version of anything by the books.

I just saw the first ever concert performance of the Happiness Project material here in Toronto. I have to say, what a show!

GavAm: I wholeheartedly agree! Every time her track plays, I start crying almost instantly. We're only 3 months into 09 and this is already the album of the year.

So now I've had about a month with Mr. Spearin and his amazing record. Honestly, while music is certainly a central point of the record, it just conveys so much more that it is not just an album, not just a recording, not just a work of art. In those 7 songs CS has made a clear landmark of the human condition. Happy, sad, regretful, hopeful, honest, secretive, innocent, guilty, fearful, embracing, futuristic and nostalgic- this record forces me to confront emotion and the essential humanity of music unlike almost anything else I have ever heard. While the music isn't necessarily groundbreaking, and the material they speak of isn't the most profound discussion of history, this little record says more about everything than most of his contemporaries can say about anything. I'm done spouting- back to the music.
