It's not anywhere near what SMiLE was supposed to be, there aren't even any comedy skits and the east to west Plymouth Rock - Hawaii narrative isn't even arranged in correct order! But, this - even when released in 2004 - was one of the greatest records ever made, and I can't begin to fathom the cultural impact it could have had if it had been released in 1967 - though I do love the mythical status and legend disseminated by its NON-release just as much! Case in point, Surf's Up was released FOUR years later and was still way beyond anything else in 1971. The material is of no time and transcends well, everything...

What a rabbit-hole this album has been. Ive listened to Smiley Smile, SMiLE Sessions, and now BWPS. While I believe a lot of the appeal of SMiLE comes from the “what-could-have-been” mystique of the project, I’m sure, had this record come out in the late 60s as intended, it would have made The Beatles rethink some of Sgt. Peppers. Best pop album ever? I doubt it. But I wish I could look at an alternate time-line where this album had been released on schedule.

Some songs here works better than the sessions: Roll Plymouth Rock, Barnyard, Cabin Essence and On A Holiday, to name a few. From the sessions, I would pick Heroes And Villains, Wonderful, Surf's Up, Vega-Tables, Wind Chimes and (obviously) Good Vibrations. I can't choose between this re-recording and the sessions. Both have their highs and lows.

I like the Smile Sessions better, because it's the real Beach Boys. This is excellent as well and I don't want my comments to come off as insulting towards this masterpiece. The fact is, 60s Smile is sublime, the mere fact that it's incomplete and will never be completed adds so much to it, that's why it's the greatest album of the 60s and possibly in all modern music. The fragments, the piecing together, the myths and legends that surround it are just so interesting and it adds to the charm of the already incredible music. While 2004 Smile is complete and was completed by the two who started it, VDP and Brian, it still isn't 60s Smile, it isn't the Beach Boys and it simply can't live up to the legendary status of the original.

Plus, most of the 'completions' (which I believe consist almost entirely of added lyrics) are completely unnecessary.

SMiLE always WAS a jigsaw puzzle. A very complex and ever expanding puzzle that was impossible to finish. Frankly the difference between this and the the SMiLE Sessions is so minimal that it's hard to say this (without the Beach Boys' gorgeous vocals or The Wrecking Crew) is any better. They're both very very far from what would have been the finished product (which to be honest, had he continued, wouldn't have been until the '70s)

This is way better than The SMiLE Sessions.SMiLE and Pet Sounds probably share spot number 1 on my favorite albums of all time list.

Thanks to the Wondermints for their dedication and labor of love. This SMiLE may not equal the boots but it was necessary and wonderful nonetheless.

You'll soon be able to find out, I believe the original Smile is coming out quite soon. Better than Pet Sounds? oh yes

I am a huge Beatlemaniac, but I can't help but wonder if this album would have blown Sgt. Pepper's out of the water in the 60's, it is THAT excellent.

I have never listened to Brian Wilson until I heard this album. It truly is an amazing work.

A real work of art, I can't even imagine the reception it would have received if it came out near Sgt. Pepper

Great album, but I'll always be listening to it melancholy considering what it could have been and what influene it might have had back then.

The music is really good, but Brain's aged voice is making this really hard for me to get into...

I'm glad BW decided to finish his masterpiece, but I still prefer the 1966-1967 bootlegs...especially the Purple Chick version. He still had his angelic voice, and contrary to what most people mistakenly think, the album was nearly complete anyways. And for you Animal Collective fans: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E2W9yRaAHyc

I'm a big Noah Lennox fan. He's a talented, wonderful musician with a ton of potential. I'd be hard pressed to say he's as good as Brian Wilson, though. Nobody is. Brian Wilson could have been (should have been) one of the greatest musicians of the century. In many ways he still is, but nobody can really conceive all of the lost potential. His story is tragic. Thankfully, he managed to - almost - hint towards that stroke of genius with Smile (2004). Wonderful album. I'm so glad he attempted to recreate his canceled vision. Definitely an admirable effort.
