Produced by "former wrestler" Joe Thomas. Fan - "Brian is known for his dense, lush wall of sound productions and themes of introspection. Pet Sounds" Joe Thomas - "What sounds? Not the Brian I know, he likes cars, surfboards and the sun set to a backdrop of Chuck Berry rhythm and blues chords. However, I believe that he has advanced since Fun, Fun, Fun - there's gonna be so many Spanish guitar flourishes, it's gonna be great! You'll see how much he has evolved"

I disagree. I find it quite inferior to the self-titled; the blame goes to the pointless Beach Boys remakes, the lyricists who occasionally supplied Brian with stinking shit-cheese (hi, Jimmy Buffett), and above all Joe Thomas being the producer. Say what you want about the outdated eighties-ness of the self-titled, that one at least made me feel Andy Paley was a good match for Brian, but Joe here just seems to push Brian towards an excessively sterile, MOR sound (occasionally verging on sounding like the songs have had all life rehearsed out of them), which really detracts from the good songwriting on display. I mean, at least Andy indulged Brian's farther-out moments like "Little Children" and "Rio Grande" , and provided some power to go with the pop, but Joe just strikes me as trying too hard to streamline him. (I noticed the lack of even baroque pop elements [like Brian's old standby timpani and sleigh bells] on too many songs, replaced by cheesy keyboard imitations.)

Agree wholeheartedly though I blame Melinda entirely. Record producer (and former wrestler) Joe Thomas did his job - this is what he does. It was Melinda who sabotaged the acclaimed work with Paley in favour of this, then had the audacity to sue Thomas for damages, yet brought him back into the fold over a decade later (by which point Joe Thomas was probably the right choice as everybody is past it and desperately needed polishing) 😬

Also I like the arrangement here for Let Him Run Wild 🤫 The production isn't the lowest point of the record, that claim goes to the lyricist on one particular track - South American 🧀 Regarding Joe Thomas (record producer and former wrestler Joe Thomas), he's quoted as saying he wasn't familiar with any of Brian's baroque works, only the surf hits. Very little research was done by Thomas as to the artist he was handling. He also explained how he had no knowledge of vintage analogue recording techniques and would act as a intermediary between Brian and the console

This could've been a Beach Boys album if only their inner politics weren't so fucked up, I'm so angry, this would've been the Beach Boys' saving grace. Instead we get Mike Love, Bruce Johnston and David Marks of the Beach Boys Salute Nascar. Fucking ridiculous.
