Great album, but why oh why is the production so "muddy" sounding. Even on the remaster, the guitars sound better, but the drums still sound muffled. It's a shame too, because there's some excellent drumming on this album.

I still can appreciate it, but I just wish the drums were more prominent in the mix.

I wore the grooves off BOC's first album in '72-'73. Almost nobody knew who they were when I saw them in 1973 at the Hollywood Paladium. They opened for Joe Walsh (who played his new hit, "Rocky Mountain Way"). Believe it or not, the top-billed band was Mott the Hoople. I agree they lost their unique sound and character when they sold out with tunes like "Don't fear the Reaper" and "Godzilla."

i am one to check my facts-esp. when it comes to stuff that happened to me in the 70s. a time when i was at my most curious...wink wink. but i beg to differ with the wikipee on the release date of 1972. That is the year it finally got some air play but it had been an underground or cult LP a couple of years before that. Of course no one wants to admit that the record went no where when it was first shipped. But and if true, i surmise that Eric Bloom knew nothing of the old system of payola and how to get your record on the radio. Explaining that as a part of your band's history is taboo and looks bad all the way around so let's all just say it was 1972. They started the band in '67 so five years out before a band this tight puts out a record? That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Have a nice day!

BOC's first and best album. One that must be heard in it's entirity. Interestingly, I first heard this album in 1971. It had been released two years prior and nobody ever heard of them. I guess it got zero airplay (on the radio). BOCs LPs #2 and #3 are great as well but after their first Radio "hit", "don't fear the reaper" I gave up on them because the rest of the album was just filler. they are loud in concert and I lost my hearing, temporaily, after sitting in the tenth row on the floor at the San Diego Sports Arena.
