Hanging on the Telephone is written by Jack Lee and originally performed by Lee's band The Nerves on their self-titled 1976 EP. The cover by Blondie was released as a single off their 1978 LP Parallel Lines peaking at number 5 in the UK.
According to the Hanging On The Telephone Songfacts), Lee regretted his own version was never a hit, but said he always knew it was a special song: "Even people who hated me – and there were plenty – had to admit it was great."
