It was my first time listening to AFUT, June of last year. I knew the band had a great reputation among black midi fans, which was the main reason why I was willing to give this album a listen. The opening track's 5/8 riff combined with its warm instrumentation was a great first impression. Not too basic, not try-hard. By the time the second track had started, my aural taste palette was sufficiently teased for me to be excited about what was to come. Chaos Space Marine was great, and the climatic string arpeggi nearly gave me chills. The outro rolled around, and that's when I heard it. "Billie Eilish style" I froze. My stomach twisted and the corners of my lips tensed. Did I hear that correctly? Surely an experienced singer and lyricist such as Isaac wouldn't ruin a piece of art with a line that can only be compared to fecal desecration?

I checked the Spotify lyrics, and as soon as the photons of the screen traveled to my eyes and neurons fired in my brain, I instantly felt a rush of severe dizziness that lasted nearly 4 second. "Billie Eilish style". Absolutely putrid. Concorde started, and I soon took the role of a trauma victim who tried desperately to suppress their memories. I was able to pretend that the lyric did not exist, and I focused fully on the present. The song was beautiful, and for just a moment, I was able to forget. Bread Song was a pleasant journey, and I regained the ability to enjoy myself. Good Will Hunting's sliding electronic opening instantly had me hooked, and as soon as the drums kicked it, I knew this would be a favourite. The chorus came, and that's when it happened.

"She had Billie Eilish style" I grabbed my headphones and instantly flicked them off of my head before I even had time to consciously process the lyrics, similar to a hand flinching from a hot plate. Previously, I had thought that H. P. Lovecraft's use of "unimaginable, indescribable horrors" was simply an excuse for a writer who didn't want to waste time with long and subpar descriptions, but I now understand what he meant. I had just experienced an Eldritch nightmare, whose sensation has left a permanent scar on my brain "Billie Eilish style" Typing this out was not an easy task, as my hands start shaking whenever I recall those words. black midi used to be one of my favourite bands, but now it is more than that. It is a motherly, godly figure. It is a Gaia, and I lay my head upon its musical bosom as it tries to "Stroke my dreams better". black midi would never hurt me like that, and I am eternally greatful.
