Apparently, the men singing with Billy on this track were all Vietnam veterans. Such a powerful and sad song.

I've known some Vietnam vets - fortunately my father isn't one of them - and all of them have had harrowing experiences, experienced terrible things.

@JoelTheCat - What? Really? This, to me, is one of the highlights of The Essential Billy Joel's second disc. Absolutely moving.

The one I would skip on Billy Joel's Greatest Hits. The one I'm going to skip right now.

He dedicated this song to the veterans, especially those from Vietnam, at his show in the 80s at the Oakland Coliseum Arena it was a 3+ hour show and we went crazy during the Scenes from an Italian Restaurant.

Best song Joel ever did. Captures real life in Nam. Thanks Billy for letting the others know. And yes it did matter. One Million seven hundred thousand Cambodian's killed by Khmer rouge after we left Nam and the politicians watched too unpopular to get involved; Over one million dead and more raped in Rwanda and the politicians watched, they weren't white; 500,00 dead in Darfur millions displaced & 10,000 more dying each month while the politicians continue to watch & multi-nationals continue to invest. Yes, it certainly does matter.

I always liked how, in concert, the chorus for GNS would be made up of BJ's roadies.

whatever good ever came of war that we are always so eager to do it again? definition of insanity is doing the same old thing but expecting new results... by this, we live in an insane world. you would think people would wise up and get tired of it but all it takes is a baboon's butt to become president and start it all over again just so the rich can get richer and the rest of us have to pay for the economic havoc that ensues. clever transfer of wealth from the people to the rich... we are so in need of a revolution!

Does anybody here know Socrate, part III by Satie? The piano sounds just like the piano in that piece.

One of my favorites to sing when vets are around.. It does not take sides of if a war is right, just or just the opposite... It proclaims what many a man has felt; if it be WWI or WWII, Korea, Nam (which this storyline is from), The Falklands, Gulf 1 or 2.... It's about the bond of blood and sacrafice for one's: Country, Family, Friends... And yet, it teaches that all in uniform must respect the 'Charlies on the other side'... If not, you're doomed on the battleline or in your mind, when you return home.... I've had grown manly men hug me for singing this when we do the shows at VFW's, American Legions and AMVETS.... If Churchill had this, the Gerries would of had a hard time sending their teen youths to the Berlin streets at the end of the "Big One"... Boys of a mere transition of youth to manhood get a 'quick maturing' in this lyric..
