“Poison” is a StarGate and Johnta Austin-written song recorded between 2007-08 at Roc The Mic Studios during the "I Am… Sasha Fierce" sessions. While the song didn’t make it on the standard edition of the double album, the song was leaked in the Summer of 2009 before being included on deluxe editions and the Bonus Tracks EP released in November of that year.

Beyonce vocalizes about a relationship that she cannot end, comparing her lover to a slow but deadly poison, much like many of the songs recording during this era influenced by Etta James and her new-found marriage with Jay-Z.

Despite not being released as a stand-alone single, critics gave it positive reviews, with S2S Magazine’s Guest Sonya Eskridge writing “we can’t help but wonder why it would have been cut.” The sultry song was including in the “Video Phone” EP and the European Double-A Side “Poison/Broken-Hearted Girl”, and became so popular in South Korea that it garnered a #1 spot on the charts in February 2010.
