This IS a good album, and Fold's trying something new, just personaly i don't think it lives up to his other albums. The piano, once at the forefront of his music, is now far less audible - which is a shame since he really is an incredible pianist, and you don't get the same sense of that on this album as it's drowned out by guitar a lot of the time...still, his vocals are awesome as always, the lyrics are excellent, so it's good - just not great like the others.

It took me until today to notice that this album existed! How is that possible?

As an rabid Ben Folds fan, I started out being very disappointed in this album. It took me at least 3 tries before I could even listen to this album in full. I kept skipping tracks. I thought the guitar on Dr Yang was too distorted and Free Coffee was an abomination of the live version. Then, during a lengthly subway trip, I listened to the whole thing. Since then I haven't been able to stop. The tracks on this album fit so well together, starting with Ben asking "Wanna see what's in my head?" then going into crazy stories of American life with a shared common theme of 'renew'. By the end of Kylie, I'm always left thinking, that's it? what happens next? So, now my only compliant about this awesome album is that it's too short!

I've been listening to it alot, and after seeing it live again the other day, the point really is it's riotous and celebratory alot of the time. It's not just amusing, it's out and out raucous ridiculous. This hasn't so much grown on me as grown in to me. Some songs leave me alone a bit, but only marginally. I almost feel like the bad reviews come from the fact that Ben's audience these days is all over the place - I mean he's non-genre-able. People don't know where to place him. If he's an 'indie' artist, should he be more rough and ready? If he's playing grown up tunes, shouldn't he be carry more serious weight and quit being so frivolous?I don't know. I genuinely don't get the levels of negativity I sometimes see for W2N.

The humor in the album is weak though. Effington makes me cringe. Cologne would be a good song if it didn't have a lame reference to an astronaut wearing diapers. Bitch Went Nuts just has a lot of swears which isn't humor. The songs aren't subtle. Did he make the humor more obvious to compensate for a growing audience with a declining IQ? Even the music, while some of it is fun and Bitch Went Nuts has great music, lacks the energy. I miss the fists pounding into the lower end of the keys and the great solos.

I love everything Ben Folds does, and this album is no exception. One of his best.

dunno why it's getting such a bad reception, imo it's another triump in Ben's catalogue. I assume it's so different to oh-so-serious and heavy-orchestrated "Songs For Silverman", that people think it's weaker. I'd say it's just the fun side of Ben that he barely shown on "Silverman", and now it's finally in full force. great album imo

this album has been evaded: http://evadethenoise.com/2008/10/06/ben-folds-way-to-normal/ (rest assured that's a good thing)

Also, Before Cologne sounds like it was pulled straight from The Unauthorized Biography and if it had been more than just an intro to Cologne I'd probably listen to it for hours on end.

I like it. It's at least more interesting and varied than Songs For Silverman, which needed a bit more variation and energy. It's not as good as Rockin' The Suburbs, but at least it sounds like it's trying to be. My only real complaints are minimal, but sometimes I can't decide if I like the humorous parts or if I think they are a little bit lame. For instance, Effington, sure it's funny, but at the same time, is it really? I can't decide. Luckily the music makes up for the lyrics. His humor used to be a little more subtle, which fit with the songs, but the blatant humor, I'm still getting used to it.

Not nearly as bad as everyone makes it out to be... maybe it's 'cause I went in listening with absolutely no expectations.

I agree with uvaclint. It's not a patch on Rockin' Suburbs or Songs for Silverman. Or anything by the Five for that matter.
