Musically, check out Where Were You When I Needed You, another song written by PF Sloan but not political in nature. For lyrics, Fortunate Son by Creedence Clearwater Revival

This was the #1 record on the Billboard Hot 100 on September 25, 1965. "Satisfaction" by the Stones had been #1 in July, and Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone" made it to #2 on the Hot 100 on September 4, 1965. July, August and September 1965 are when--IMO-- the '50s finally died and what we think of today as the '60s truly began.

Just an awesome song. I busked it often in my younger days & played a cover of it, along with Gimmee Shelter, in a band I was in. It was the epitome of the protest song, Barry's gravel-like voice and the passion with which he sings it has always sent shivers up my spine...pure genius...& kudos to PF Sloan for writing this at 19! There is such beauty in this song, poetic lyrics, a simple chord progression, showing you don't need to be Mozart to make musical magick. Live on and love on ya all! Stay free!

Never heard the song you mention, Dead Kinksy, but I'm going to get onto it as soon as I can. How could anybody try to answer this? It's not exactly Billy Jean Is Not My Love!

I so wish this brilliant song didn't come to mind so often anymore.... His new Eve 2012 sounds a little too polished and kinda affected negatively by his religious shift, but it still ranks pretty high by today's standards. By the way, The Spokesman's Dawn of Correction (a twisted "answer" to this one that was also a hit in'65) is one of the most disgusting songs I ever heard. Comparable to Jan Berry's horrible pro-destruction tunes. I'm surprised some people here mentioned his and Dean's version as potentially better. How could they do it justice if they didn't get it?

I recently saw a YouTube video of Barry performing this song in 2012, which was amazing, his voice as great now as then, and every line so, SO relevant still, in some ways more so. And of course, PF Sloan takes the credit for the most amazing protest song lyrics ever.

Possibly the best protest song ever, but Barry McGuire didn't write it. It was written by a now almost unknown singer/songwriter called PF Sloan, who also wrote Barry's brilliant Sins Of The Father.
