4. Avatar is an early name of the band Savatage before 1983. The band was formed by Jon and Criss Oliva in 1979 at Astro Skate in Tarpon Springs, Florida. When they first formed, they sometimes went under the name Metropolis. They recorded two songs, "Rock Me" and "Minus Love", for a compilation released by the radio station 95YNF and played a show in a K-Mart parking lot to support the release. They released a demo on cassette in February 1983, Living for the Night. In September 1983 they released an 7" EP City Beneath the Surface. Shortly after, "Avatar" was forced to change its name due to copyright issues. Combining the words "Savage" and "Avatar", the band decided on Savatage.

Another Avatar demo compilation surfaced in 1999, Beyond The Doors Of The Pit. Savatage released the Avatar demos on The Hammer Comes Down Demos.
