It would be lazy to label LA-based trio Automatic’s debut album simply as ‘post-punk’, with its collection of bright jangly songs, mostly running in at under three-minutes.

I Love You, Fine opens with more than a passing reference to the early 80s electronic acts like Tubeway Army or OMD. Bass guitar marks the guitar beat, as the synthesisers and simple lyrics wash over. It wouldn’t be out of place on a David Lynch movie soundtrack.

By contrast, the two opening singles, Too Much Money and Calling It, are a lively blast. Lyrically, Signal examines life in the 21st century and clear references to disaffection with life and the demands of, for example, social media, make this an apt album for the time.

Album release date: September 27
