Not much is known about the origins of the song Lakes of Pontchartrain (sometimes The Lakes of Pontchartrain), though it is commonly held to have originated in the southern United States in the 19th century. The liner notes accompanying Planxty's version state that the tune was probably brought by soldiers fighting for the British or French armies in Louisiana and Canada in the War of 1812. Although the tune might date to that period, the popular lyrics undoubtedly came much later, perhaps shortly after the American civil war.

Aoife (pronounced EEF-ah) O’Donovan (born November 18, 1982 in Newton, Massachusetts) is an Irish-American singer and songwriter. As well as solo work, she is known for being the lead singer for the progressive bluegrass/string band Crooked Still and a member of the female folk-noir trio Sometymes Why.
