Once In A Lifetime was written in the midst of a pandemic, which All Time Low singer Alex Gaskarth feels is reflected in the subject matter. "It's a song about heartbreak…people going through a trial…that feeling of an epic loss," he said in a Rock Sound interview not long before the release of the song. "It just felt like a sentiment that made sense and needed to be touched on."
He also compared the song to one of the band's most popular tracks, which came off their previous album, Wake Up, Sunshine. "I think this new song feels a lot like it was built from the same pieces that we used to put Monsters together."
