It’s taken me a few years to form this opinion, but I can safely say that this is the best of the three ‘comeback albums’. The first four songs on The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here are so good, but it fades after that point for me, whilst Black Gives Way to Blue is just so strong from start to finish. At points I think it rivals the original three albums.

new singer does a good layne impression. probably overhated, this is easily the best album they made outside of the original 3.

Just revisited this album. I think it's unfair to try and compare to classic AIC, but it's a solid album. Lot of heavy riffs, and some good songwriting. Maybe a little too radio friendly in parts

11 years ago, today: ... this album was released... how time flies! ... Can we bring it to 8M next month? (It has 7.4 million scrobbles right now)

It's not worth complaining. Last.fm staff won't do anything about it. They don't care.

I think this is a fantastic album, right up there with Facelift and Dirt. I understand people's issues with the mixing, the guitars are a bit too loud and the drums sound flat, but hey, that's music in the 21st century, unfortunately.

the drums do sound a bit flat compared to the other sound layers. guess we will have to wait another 3-5 years for a remix to come out.

point out what you don't like in the mix so other people can understand what you mean

The mix is too loud. That's the main problem, which then results in other issues: instruments are distorted, clipping, the album is hard to listen to in one sitting, yadda yadda. I'm not the first one to point it out, though. Black Gives Way to Blue is notorious for these issues.

I think this album would have more people into it if the band wasn't called Alice in Chains anymore [2] It would've probably been an all around much better album because the singer wouldn't feel like he has to ape Layne and the band could have been creative without pandering to expectations from a fanbase that wants more of the same over and over. As it is, it's a thoroughly predictable regurgitation of past glory days.

Very mixed feelings about this. It's not a bad album, but it feels sort of bland. I think I would have liked it if they'd reformed under any other name than Alice In Chains. Can't really forgive them for that.

unpopular (or not?) opinion: i think this album would have more people into it if the band wasn't called alice in chains anymore, most people think of layne when they think of alice in chains and of course this isn't layne.. therefore it turns them off
