Donovan's original version of Season of the Witch was recorded in 1966, while all Kooper's version with Bloomfield & Stills was was released 2 years later. There's quite a bit of a contest between the two versions as Dnovan's features the Jeff Beck Group which at the time had John Bonham on drums, Maggie Bell on vocals (easily outsinging the Mickey Mouse voice of Al Kooper) and Ron Wood on bass. Bloomfield was just coming off his stint with the Electric Flag and was in need of some down time and Stills was setting himself up for a new trio called Crosby, Stills & Nash. The horns etc. were added post production, and saved the the entire thing from being a jaw cracking yawn. It's still a favourite album after 50 years after release. Check out The Live Adventures of Al Kooper & Mike Bloomfield [Sony Music Distribution 83023] for a good sampling of the 2 working well together.

To be honest, Stills doesn't really contribute much to this until the last couple of minutes, does he?

Jazzed up and more atmospheric than Donovan's. Eleven minutes of bliss. (Super Session)

Like it though he has kind of sanitized it. Can imagine him being able to play this on the Andy Williams show surrounded by the requisite dancing girls.
