Some things should stay buried. APC was one of them. This is kinda hard to listen to, let alone enjoy(totally IMO, you may love this, whatever, I don't care).Maynard is actually halfway decent on this when not singing cringeworthy choruses. But musically, this is just boring. I expected much more from Billy Howerdell.

To add a different kind of opinion. I liked APC a lot before this album (not as much as TOOL though), then when I first listened to Eat the Elephant I was like "this is nothing like APC.." and was disappointed. Then it started growing on me after each listen, now it is probably my favourite album of theirs.

i thought so too, initially... but then i figured fuck it, apparently we live in a world where you need to be this heavy-handed to be heard. it's in the running as album of the year for me.

I only really care for By and Down & even then the version they released years ago is superior, including their live take on it. My ex ruined APC for me anyway, so I hardly ever feel like listening to them. What made them so great to me was Billy's guitar playing and the sincerity and power that their first two albums held. I still think that album artwork is awful.

Going into this without listening to any singles, I didn't know what to expect. I'm pleased with the result. It's has a very interesting atmophere and the lyrics are great. I like everything about it. Even the cover (which I see it's a issue with some people but I dig it).

Даже не знала, что у них вышел новый альбом. Давно уже потеряла надежду на то, что у них вообще когда-нибудь что-нибудь выйдет, лол. Рада, что они вернулись. Альбом очень понравился.

Mmmh...formally everything here is in its right place, interesting, layered, worth more than a few listenings to get into it...but still, it feels like there is something missing from the original recipe. I mean what I liked most is that Howerdel + Maynard previously managed to deliver some more immediate/pop version of Tool + that rock edge. Now I'm not just complaining about the lack of heavier sounds and such. Is more like that it feels to me that they have lost that along way, and it would be perfectly fine if it was meant to evolve into something else in exchange. Problem is that I do not hear that new special something else to make such a transition meaningful or worth...is like they plunged all the way in the mellow side of their music. So APC without their "Judith" edge is ok but for a whole album..well, I'm still left with that "I don't know" feeling..

Pretty hilarious how much I end up enjoying this album after I got thrown out of their show last year for smoking weed. Fucking security in dickhead god mode due to their no cell phone rule. Swore I'd never listen to em again but of course couldn't resist. This is actually a really great album.

Missing some heavier tracks like The Outsider or Pet, but the album is a nice surprise overall.

I'm torn on this one. Great lyrics and interesting decision to replace rhythm guitars with piano, but I find some of the choruses needlessly harsh. The production almost sounds like a cross between prog rock and industrial sensory abuse, with the industrial sensory abuse application to alternative rock sounding kinda hilariously weak compared to how it'd be applied in, say, Author & Punisher. Maynard channeling his metal influences more really would've helped on that front. There's also some odd tracks that seem to kill the album pacing regardless of where I put them, most notably Get the Lead Out. However, this also has some of their best tracks ever, where the two worlds combine gloriously. The Doomed, The Contrarian and TalkTalk are outright some of their best tracks ever, and I wish more songs used the loud/soft dynamics as splendidly as The Doomed and Hourglass. Very bold album, like a bizarro crossover of industrial and prog rock. Time shall tell if it's more of a grower.

Solid album. I think it'll grow on me more too. It's definitely no where near the first two albums for me, but it still feels/sounds like a new APC album. I like every track.

This may be an appetizer for the eventual Tool album but it's such a massive appetizer that I don't mind waiting.

Signs point to me not liking all of these songs, going by first impressions, but this is an interesting bridge between Maynard and Howerdell's favorite styles. So far 4 tracks landed, and even if more don't, I applaud how uncompromising and legitimately innovative this is. The Contrarian is simply marvelous.

I like it more and more with each listen (and I've listened to it about a dozen times since it leaked). Vocally, I think it's Maynard's best work ever. It's exactly what I'd expect from APC in 2018. I'm very pleased with it. Even the Fish song is growing on me.
