Variations on a Cloud was released as a download for people who preordered Hawaii: Part II on September 11, 2012. It was written and performed by Joe Hawley and Rob Cantor. It contains reprisals from multiple songs in Hawaii: Part II as well as from Tally Hall's Ruler of Everything.
It was removed from streaming services for almost a month in 2021, but was republished on September 11, 2021, the 20th anniversary of the World Trade Center attacks.
Variations on a Cloud is widely interpreted as being about the attacks, specifically the people who jumped from the towers as they were crumbling.
Joe Hawley recorded his vocals for the song in a covered boat inside a barn on a family farm in Michigan.
