Description
Join us for The African Diaspora Inaugural Ball—an elegant evening in celebration of education and culture. On January 18th, 2009, the extraordinary Harman Center for the Arts located in the heart of Penn Quarter in Washington, DC will host the Diaspora’s biggest stars including:
Grammy-award nominated singing sensation, LES NUBIANS, up-and-coming Haitian singer-songwriter BélO and special guest appearance by Grammy Award winner and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, ANGELIQUE KIDJO.
The evening will also highlight the diversity of Washington DC’s cultural heritage including entertainment by an all women’s samba-reggae Brazilian percussion group, an energetic East African Dance troupe, and a live South African band.
The red-carpet event will bring together important members from the entertainment, political, humanitarian and business worlds in celebration of the inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama and the accomplishments of the African Diaspora in the United States.
Our theme—“I AM THE CHANGE: Educating, Empowering and Engaging the Next Generation of Leaders,”— highlights the importance of investing in the education and empowerment of the next generation. Proceeds will go to The Batonga Foundation, founded by Angelique Kidjo and dedicated to providing secondary and higher education to girls throughout Africa; and First Book, a nonprofit organization committed to providing new books to children in low income communities.
