Description

The days get shorter. The trip gets deeper. A day party orbiting Melbourne Town Hall : 8 hours, 3 stages, 1 ticket.

Shake loose under the chandeliers and behind the bins in a live mixtape of music, performance, art and film.

Day Tripper laces Melbourne Town Hall, Capitol Theatre, and Max Watt’s with a big old day party in the middle of the long weekend. It’s post-punk, acid house, minimal techno, ambient, hip hop, disco, video works, and contemporary dance. Prepare for a block’s worth of day tripping that splashes into adjoining arcades and laneways. All in one ticket.

The Melbourne Town Hall will host Yasiin Bey (FKA Mos Def) performing MF DOOM, his tribute to the late, great rapper’s rapper. Keep exploring the Hall’s multiple rooms to find acts like Bar Italia, London’s elusive post-punks, who are out of the shadows and in Melbourne for the first time. Delve into rhythmic workouts from Indiana’s Pulitzer-prize nominated composer Jlin. Electrelane’s Verity Susman and Wire’s Matthew Simms unite to make earth-bound and alien jams in their new duo, MEMORIALS. Esoteric outsider Alastair Galbraith and pathologically prolific Richard Youngs will be there. As will 79-year-old jazz diva and disco queen Asha Puthli. Also, the brass band we’ve invited intends to get freaky.

Down the stairs at Max Watt’s, it’s HTRK’s 21st birthday, and the band’s promise of a party to end all parties. The cult Melbourne/Naarm duo celebrate their classic discography with an extended live set and a curated lineup.

Day Trippers get priority entry to 24 Hour Rock Show Jeremy Deller’s marathon of fearless music documentaries screening at The Capitol.

And that’s just for starters. Triple R are spearheading a big local lineup. And, in the coming weeks, the list goes even deeper. Deep like the Hall’s ten thousand organ pipes. Deep like dancefloor heat on a wind-bitten day.
