Description

Just a week after the announcement of the lineup for its Barcelona edition, Primavera Sound Porto is also looking to its future, which automatically leads to a time and a place: the 6th, 7th and 8th of June in Parque da Cidade, the dream venue that has become a place of pilgrimage for the Primavera community. Now that we know the when and where of the eleventh edition of the Portuguese event, already a reference in its own right on the European circuit, and not only as a sister festival, we present the brilliant lineup of Primavera Sound Porto 2024. Far-reaching and eclectic and perfectly aligned with the philosophy that has brought the festival here but enhanced with its own features after a decade of mutual influence in Portugal. A compendium of 48 names in which there is room for infinite routes, although they all end up in the same place: three days to let yourself be surprised by the most exciting contemporary music.

A lineup that screams "girls to the front!"

Just because the exceptional has become the norm at Primavera Sound doesn't mean that we shouldn’t keep highlighting something that on a global level is an anomaly. Although few festivals in the world have female artists as headliners, the real world says otherwise: Lana del Rey and SZA will headline Primavera Sound Porto 2024 on their own merits. The former, firmly established as the great chronicler of American music of this century; the latter, a generational talent who has pushed the boundaries of R&B, will play her first show in Portugal. Both lead a lineup with a predominantly female presence (41,67% women, 39,58% men and 18.75% mixed projects) that includes Mitski, who will prove that she is already much more than a cult singer-songwriter, and PJ Harvey, who is ready to split into all the different PJ Harveys she hides inside, will also shine. In addition, Pulp will return to the stage with their collection of out-of-the-ordinary anthems and even new repertoire, The National will open the doors of that discography in which we feel at home and Justice will kick off the party with Ed Banger's denomination of origin in the return to Parque da Cidade.

A 100% Primavera line-up

Once you've spotted Shellac, the band that doesn't play at festivals but that year after year heeds the call of Primavera Sound, there's no doubt that this is a 100% Primavera line-up. Although this is not the only seal of approval that stands out in a lineup of almost fifty names, that is so eclectic and inclusive that it can only be Primavera Sound. From the new gothic song of Ethel Cain to the fluorescent refrains of Kim Petras, from the floating folk by Julie Byrne to the afrobeat polyrhythm of Obongjayar, at Primavera Sound Porto 2024 there will be an intersection of sounds of all kinds and conditions. The radical pop of Arca, the non-jazz of This Is The Kit, the different rock routes taken by Amyl and the Sniffers, Tropical Fuck Storm and Mannequin Pussy, the digital baroque of Eartheater and the songbook of Lambchop in their most essential version: everything has a place here.

A lineup with hiding places

Although this line-up includes revelations and discoveries, there are nooks and crannies that are difficult to access where particularly elusive musical proposals are hidden. It's not a trap but a treasure chest: there's a prize for getting to them. The anti-singer-songwriter Joanna Sternberg and her intimate ballads. Lankum, a mutant folk band straight out of a Celtic fable. Tirzah and her constant quest for glitch. billy woods, veteran of the hip-hop underground who is used to rapping on the fringes. Wolf Eyes, Nate Young and John Olson’s terrorist sound cell. Lisabö and their unrelenting post-hardcore. Projects that go against the tide, outsiders who now find their place naturally at Primavera Sound Porto 2024.

A lineup with your next favourite band

Want it fast? Militarie Gun. Do you prefer it psychedelic? Crumb. Maybe a little bit furious? Scowl. Maybe quirky? Water From Your Eyes. Or catchy from first listen? Royel Otis. Or euphoric? The Last Dinner Party. Or abrasive? Mandy, Indiana. Either way, your next favourite band is at Primavera Sound Porto 2024. The Parque da Cidade will be the perfect stage to test the recent eruption of all these bands live. The complete opposite is the case of the veterans Blonde Redhead, fully reactivated after releasing their first album in almost a decade. The New Yorkers will present Sit Down for Dinner, their tenth album, at the festival.

A lineup that fala português

As usual, Porto will once again embrace a philosophy created in Barcelona that over the years has also become its own, but the exchange of influences will once again go both ways. Each incursion into Portuguese territory gives Primavera Sound the chance to take the pulse of the Portuguese music scene, represented in the lineup by Amaura, Ana Lua Caiano, André Henriques, Best Youth, Classe Crua, Conjunto Corona, Expresso Transatlântico, Máquina, Milhanas, mutu, Samuel Úria, Silly, Soluna and Tiago Bettencourt. A window onto the contemporary sounds of a country that has not just one soundtrack but an infinite number
