Description
With his unmistakable raspy baritone, jazzy elegance and punk idiosyncrasy, King Krule, one of the most unique musicians and heralds of the younger generation, will present his new album The OOZ, which critics are already hailing as a highlight of this year’s crop of releases.
“A masterpiece of jaundiced vision from one of the most compelling artists alive.” That’s how Pitchfork concluded its praise of the new album by Briton Archy Marshall, The OOZ, the second he has released via XL Recordings as King Krule, and slapped a 9/10 grade onto it (for comparison: only Kendrick Lamar‘s DAMN. received a higher grade this year!). No wonder; on The OOZ, the musical eccentric turned a failed relationship into an hour of wandering around luxurious, finely crafted sonic scenes, and in doing so, attained the creative heights hinted at by his previous EPs and full-length debut 6 Feet Beneath the Moon.
Regardless of whether he signs his work as King Krule, Zoo Kid or under his own name, regardless of whether he sinks his emotionally wracked music deep into dark jazz, post-punk or hip-hop, Marshall’s impassioned performance and characteristically angry baritone are still as stunning as when he first grabbed the attention of the media and general public as a mere teen. Through media reticence, different monikers, interchanging roles – from singer to multi-instrumentalist to producer to rapper – and sporadic bursts of activity, the “pissed-off Joe Strummer in a stand-up row with Billy Bragg,” as he was described by The Guardian, successfully maintains his reputation as an enigmatic musical genius, held in high esteem even by global stars such as Beyoncé and Frank Ocean. In February, we’ll finally have the honour of hearing him live in Šiška.
