Description

Anohni: Antony & The Johnsons + Oneohtrix Point Never present HOPELESSNESS

Proving a chameleonic force akin to Vivid LIVE alumni Lou Reed, Laurie Anderson and Brian Eno, ANOHNI raises the emotional force of her previous project as lead singer and songwriter of Antony and the Johnsons to new electronic heights for a Sydney only premiere at Sydney Opera House.

Staging her fifth album Hopelessness in an immersive, sense-shifting performance, Vivid LIVE will be Australian audiences only opportunity to experience this ground-breaking new chapter in one of the most singular musical voices of the 21st century.

Revered for her past work I Am A Bird Now, The Crying Light and Swanlights, ANOHNI’s new release is a collaboration with Hudson Mohawke (TNGHT, Kanye West) and Warp’s Oneohtrix Point Never to room-shuddering effect. HOPELESSNESS; self-described as ‘an electronic record with sharp teeth’ - is a dance soundtrack with soulful vocals and direct lyrics addressing the surveillance of individuals, the drone war and ecocide.

Drawing comparisons to Radiohead's artistic call-to-arms in Kid A, the enigmatic Sydney favourite is set to enter a lineage of protest classics since releasing the world-warning new single '4 Degrees'. Featuring plenty of brass breaks, soul-enveloping surges of synth, orchestral strings and thunderous percussion to deliver this cautionary tale.

Now presenting one of her most ambitious performances yet, ANOHNI will explore anthemic song-writing, identity, through an audio-visual appearance in the intimate surrounds of the Joan Sutherland Theatre at Vivid LIVE, in a project that will leave you changed.

"When I heard Antony, I knew that I was in the presence of an angel." - Lou Reed
