An ever-evolving musical concern, Portland’s Parenthetical Girls has been fortunate enough to drain blood (often literally) from a wealth of gifted collaborators over its unlikely eight-year existence. In celebration of this particularly knotty family tree, the group presents an evening of singular performances from (((GRRRLS))) past and present, concluding in a grand-scale, multi-disciplinary Parenthetical Girls performance. Featuring musical guests Golden Retriever, Classical Revolution PDX performing compositions by Jherek Bischoff, and a dance piece by choreographer Allie Hankins.
Parenthetical Girls is a pop group. Of sorts. Charting a particularly idiosyncratic course over its complicated chronology, the ensemble has been home to a revolving cast of collaborators in multiple disciplines, with founder and creative director Zac Pennington acting as the sole constant. With a résumé that includes dalliances in chamber music, large-scale experimental theater, electronic pop, and innumerable other aesthetic and sonic diversions, the group has performed its work at a multitude of international arts and music festivals, including Donaufestival (Vienna), Primavera Sound (Barcelona), New Island Festival (NYC), Intersecciones (Gijon, Spain), PuSh Festival (Vancouver, B.C.), Bumbershoot (Seattle), and TBA:08 (Portland). Ever the pragmatists, Parenthetical Girls are in the midst of releasing their latest album, Privilege, as a series of five, blood-numbered 12” EPs, via the group’s own Slender Means Society label.
