The Chiara String Quartet and NOW Ensemble come together Friday, May 6 at (Le) Poisson Rouge for a joint album release concert, celebrating two fresh albums from New Amsterdam Records (the "classical music label for the young and fearless" - About.com) with some of the foremost performers and composers of this emerging self-reliant generation: NOW Ensemble’s sophomore statement, Awake (with compositions by ensemble members Judd Greenstein, Mark Dancigers, Patrick Burke, and commissioned work by Missy Mazzoli, Sean Friar, and David Crowell), and Jefferson Friedman: Quartets, performed by the Chiara String Quartet and special guest, electronic duo, Matmos.

Jefferson Friedman: Quartets, produced by GRAMMY-winning engineer, Judith Sherman, includes Friedman’s String Quartets Nos. 2 (1999) and 3 (2005), performed by the Chiara String Quartet (Rebecca Fischer and Julie Yoon, violins; Jonah Sirota, viola; Gregory Beaver, cello), plus two remixes of the quartets by electronica duo Matmos (Drew Daniel and Martin Schmidt). Both quartets, written for and commissioned by the Chiara, reflect the long-standing relationship between the composer and performers.

Awake is a dynamic, electrifying LP from NOW Ensemble (Alex Sopp, flute; Sara Budde, clarinet, Mark Dancigers, electric guitar; Logan Coale, double bass; Michael Mizrahi, piano). It is the group's first new album since their self-titled New Amsterdam debut, which launched the label in 2008 and immediately made a mark for its “…formal elegance of chamber music with a pop-honed concision and rhythmic vitality” (Time Out New York).
