Description

Riding high on the back of triumphant performances at last year’s Glastonbury, SXSW, Lollapalooza, and Newport festivals, The Low Anthem are one of the music worlds most hotly tipped acts right now. Their distinct, anthemic brand of Americana manages to rise way above its influences, through its startling lyrical imagery and magical melodies. Last year’s album Oh My God, Charlie Darwin was called. The Low Anthem’s musical palette is, however, a very broad one. Hushed, more solemn moments are punctuated by soaring rock-outs, which show off some apocalyptic folk influences.

The band was formed in 2006 by Miller, Prystowsky and former member Dan Lefkowitz, and has had the current line up of Miller, Jeff Prystowsky, Jocie Adams, and Mat Davidson since 2007. Miller, a folk singer and painter from New York, and Prystowsky, a jazz bassist and baseball scholar from New Jersey, met at Brown University while working for WBRU, the United States’ first ever college radio station.

"The Low Anthem could have sprung fully formed off a Fillmore poster, circa 1968: one part Dylan's erudition, one part Neil Young's hallucinatory visions, one part The Band's rootsy austerity, one part Leonard Cohen's apocalyptic melancholy." (Uncut)
"ethereal transcendence… laden with poignancy" (The Guardian)
