The top sound system, sparkling array of local and national musicians, and fantastical decor - imagine the Twin Peaks Roadhouse repackaged as Vegas discotheque - attracted immediate national attention to the subterranean venue, but folks across Portland make the trek for late-night milkshakes (an enlightened diner cuisine packs tables twenty-one hours a day) or the ever-mobbed, sorta-disgusting pick-up scene above ground. The picturesque coziness of the ski-chalet-chic surroundings attracts their share of older groups, of course, but, blame the absence of cigarettes or preponderance of adult-contemporary acts or partnership with adjoining Jupiter Motel (where most every touring artist stays these days, sometimes for well after the show), the crowds tend towards a Beavertonian-Cosmo-cologne monied sleaze. All the same, should the bridge-and-tunnel crowd wish to finance the LoBu renaissance, who are we to argue?
