Last.fm Quiz
5 Jul 2008, 11:07
Name your top 10 artists played on last.fm
1. Abricot
2. Perfume Tree
3. Sankt Otten
4. Bowery Electric
5. Cocteau Twins
6. Halou
7. Lost Balance
8. Lotus
9. Curium
10. Sorem Sound System
What was the first song you ever heard by 6?
I think
Honeythief or You are One of Us. I'm not sure though, but I guess it was one of these two.
What is your favourite album of 2?
A Lifetime Away! For the most, Dust manages to be really close to it though.
What is your favourite lyric that 4 has sung?
Oh, Bowery Electric aren't really about the lyrics. The (only) lyrics of
Beat:
Words are just noise,
words are only noise.
Oh, they're not the only ones. At some point, it is replaced with
Repeat after me
Repeat after me
With all the sound effects going on, I seem to hear "rebeat" instead of "repeat"...
How many times have you seen 5 live?
0. (mind you, I haven't seen live ANYONE I've played on Last.fm. Well, anyway, I don't like standing near the typical loud amplifiers...)
What is a good memory you have involving the music of 10?
It was really an agony trying to find their music. A good memory should be that time when I managed to find some songs at a friend of mine. At that time though, I didn't fully appreciated the songs - only now I did that, even though I still have the feeling that most of Screaming Black is plagiarized from somewhere...
Is there a song of 3 that makes you sad?
Oh yeah! I barely can stand the painful beauty of [track artist=Sankt Otten]Fallen und fangen [Johannes der Laeufer][/track]! Halfway through the song, tears and goose bumps are a must with all the emotion the vocalist evokes...
What is your favorite lyric that 2 has sung?
"rainbows flood my naked sheets
while my precious nightmare jacket
my precious nightmare jacket
folds around and around and around me like death"
Nightmare Jacket
What is your favorite song by 9?
Tough one. I think I'll go with
Cliffbeckon.
How did you get into 3?
I got into Sankt Otten quite hard. From the first times I've listened to Eine Kleine Traurigkeit and Wir koennen ja Freunde bleiben I thought the songs were OK, but it was quite recently that I realized how great these albums were.
What was the first song you heard by 1?
Glimpse. That's the only Abricot song I could find for a while.
What is your favorite song by 4?
Very hard choice. I like all of Lushlife, but maybe I will choose
Postscript as it hasn't weared off yet!
How many times have you seen 9 live?
0. (well anyway Evan didn't performed too much live under this name)
What is a good memory you have involving 2?
Probably the months in which I was nearly addicted to Nightmare Jacket.
Is there a song of 8 that makes you sad?
No...
What is your favorite album of 5?
Treasure, closely followed by Twinlights EP.
What is your favorite lyric that 3 has sung?
No, I don't have a favorite... because I can't really understand the lyrics. :)
What is your favorite song of 1?
Very hard to choose! All the 4 songs I've got are excellent!
What is your favorite song of 10?
Beautiful Spirit or A Piece of Dismind or Screaming Black.
How many times have you seen 8 live?
0.
What is your favorite album of 1?
Oh, they don't really have albums. They only made 2 demos and I only got one of them (A Drop of Yellow?).
What is a great memory you have considering 9?
When Bism finally arrived on mTraks after one awfully long month.
What was the first song you heard by 8?
Another Day... Because it was among the two free downloads from their official website.
What is your favorite cover by 3?
They didn't do many covers, but I do like the only cover I've got - [track artist=Sankt Otten]Sehnen [Hätte ich von Dir eine Fotografie][/track]. (don't ask me how I got it... blame it on Stephen ;) ) -
Cocteau Twins + something else
4 Jul 2008, 18:35
Today I've finally listened to Cocteau Twins' Treasure and I wonder: why didn't I listened to it ages ago? Considering the fact that I've already listened to the entire Lullabies To Violaine box set, I should have already taken an overdose of their main albums. The truth is that I started with EPs like Twinlights (Pink Orange Red and Golden-Vein are really impressive) and Otherness (Mark Clifford's remixes are excellent!) and considering the almost-general presumption that B-sides can be more interesting than A-sides from a certain point of view, I decided to give Lullabies To Violaine a try (I like the artwork too). I gotta admit that there are several interesting songs on their more or less early EPs... And yes, I've checked out some of their main stuff too. Most notably, Heaven or Las Vegas which was pretty good after a couple of listens but still nowhere near Treasure. This is pure bliss. For quite a lot of songs I couldn't stop thinking about how awesome this stuff seems to be. I remember that, on first listen, I wasn't too impressed by My Bloody Valentine's Loveless (MBV is not Cocteau Twins though) either, although I've recently got a love for
To Here Knows When (to be honest, I really liked that song when I seen its video on MTV2 back in the day; mainly because of MTV2 I've found the beauty of
Soon and To Here Knows When). Yeah, I should relisten Loveless, as I was very impressed by the complete set of covers done by Japancakes, that uncover the subtle parts of MBV's "modern classic". I'm not a big fan of the term 'classic', within any meaning, and I think Loveless lacks that quality which makes a classic undeniably classic, but maybe that's why it could be cool. And I should check out Glider too. Blame it on Airiel.
Oh, the rant has grown quite long... Well, let's just say that the first half of Treasure is undeniably stunning. Lorelei... wow. Pandora... wow. Not the only 'wow' tracks over here though. Kinda like with Massive Attack's Mezzanine, the first half is very strong, full of *coughs* classics, but on the second half there are songs that someone might call 'just B-sides', but are very interesting as well. Already on the first listen I could see the beauty within the last two songs and I will sure uncover more as I would want to put all the songs from Treasure on my MP3 player. I guess CT remains 'headphone music' - actually, I listened to Twinlights intially on my MP3 player.
And to bore you no more, I'll give this link: http://www.stylusmagazine.com/reviews/anti-atlas/future-nostalgia.htm
and say that, while everyone seems to hate Pitchfork, I don't see how could this critic (if not the entire Stylus Magazine) be a lot better than they. Let's ignore the way he describes the 4AD sound (I guess he's poetic in a way...). But instead of actually writing a review, he makes a one paragraph rant on paradoxes and the "Bizarro" name of the band (Anti Atlas), then rants on a supposed soprano saxophone on track 3 (I don't remember hearing a sax on that track that would cause such a rant... maybe he played the album at the maximum volume, which is NOT the way trip-hop should be listened to). Then he manages to mention the name of another track (hallelujah!) before delving into another rant on the cover art... Awful to say the least. I don't think Future Nostalgia would deserve a C-, at least a B or something, although some songs are heading towards A... -
Tricky
15 Jun 2008, 11:00
He, he, Knowle West Boy is coming out after all. I don't know, but I barely have any hope that this Tricky album would be better than Vulnerable. I've never been expecting a Maxinquaye 2, I wasn't mad about Maxinquaye in the first place, although I do like the first half of the album a lot. I've seen some people who've listened to the leaked album and said it's Maxinquaye 2, but for now I'm a bit sceptical... You know what I am really waiting for? The next Massive Attack album. -

Long to kiss...
2 May 2008, 07:19
in my eyes
in the dark
in my eyes
long to kiss
purse my lips
long to kiss
in my dreams
in the dark
in my dreams
long to kiss
in my dreams
fever trembles thru my dreams
dark and darker
ever darker
Apparently, these are the lyrics of Antenne's
Long to Kiss. "#3" will be released in July on Helmet room recordings but in the meanwhile, for those like me that eagerly wait for the album, MP3 versions of them will be available on Amazon from May 27th. Now that's great news! Along with the announcement, the cover art was finally revealed:

Seriously, don't need no Portishead - Third when this will come around. The cover art is interesting to say the least - of course, I would have wanted to match the cover art of the previous albums, but this one isn't bad at all... What intrigues me the most about it is the redish part on the right; I have already guessed that in the left there are clothes with nobody in them. Interesting... -
