Vincent Gallo (born Buffalo, New York 11 April 1962) is an Italian American movie actor and director starring in a number of independent movies, notably Buffalo ‘66 and the The Brown Bunny.
Vincent Gallo’s strength and weaknesses lie in his persona and ability to express divisive feelings. His music can be devoid from any grandeur and absent sometimes are “popular” aesthetic sensibilities of strict meter, tempo, or modern recording techniques. Instead Gallo focuses on mood, gesture, and simplicity in composition.
From soft mellotron melodies to meandering guitar lines, his musical expressions are intended to either guide the listener through conceptual frameworks with gestural motives, rhythms, and sounds; or the listener is presented an almost archetypical song structure with clear cadence and direction. Lyrics like, Laura, Laura, come back are repeated, establishing a mood and surreal, confessionial qualities. His weary, effeminate voice more earnestly represents an attempt at guileless presentation and unabashed, emotional, discord — contrasting with popular opinion on his character.
His harsh qualities can still be heard in the music except this time it’s in the noise of Ass Fucker (Reprise) and in the awkward harmonies of
A Picture of Her.
A less abrasive side of Gallo glimmers through though — through hazy tones accompanying the words, Goodnight baby/sleep tight/you and me.
