  • The biggest concert event of the year!

    21 Apr 2008, 04:34 by CrazyChris576

Fri 18 Apr – WSOU 60th Anniversary Concert!

    Oh, what a night.

That's all I can say for WSOU's 60th Anniversary Conert. It was unbe-fucking-lievable.

Granted, there were glitches. AnAkA almost didn't get to play because their drummer didn't show up until 15 minutes after they were supposed to go on. But he got there, and they played Rust & Jade. The best one-song set ever seen at a concert.

A Life Once Lost came on next. They did a lot of stuff from IRON GAG, but also balanced in plenty from Hunter. It was a good set, featuring PlayPain & Panic, PlayFirewater Joyride, Ill Will, PlayVulture, and some other goodies.

Five Finger Death Punch was next. They only got to do five songs off The Way Of The Fist, but they made it good. They did PlayAshes, PlaySalvation, PlayThe Way Of The Fist, PlayThe Bleeding, and PlayWhite Knuckles. Their stage presence was great throughout, and Ivan Moody showed no signs of vocal trouble. I was greatly pleased.

I won't get into my feelings on Otep. Let's just say that I would never, ever, EVER pay money to see them again. They are a creepy, opinionated, no-talent band. That is all.

Thankfully, Unearth made me forget Otep had even played. They put on their usual high-energy, insanely awesome performance. The setlist consisted of the usuals - Giles, PlayEndless, This Glorious Nightmare, Zombie Autopilot, Sanctity Of Brothers, PlayMy Heart Bleeds No Longer, PlayBlack Hearts Now Reign, and The Great Dividers. Then at the end, they gave us a quick preview of a track that would be a part of their new album. That was amazing in and of itself. Unearth made the night perfect without even needing the headliners to come on.

Of course, Shadows Fall did come on, and they blew us away as expected. With an incredibly diverse setlist, they had everything they needed to please all the fans. They played old classics like PlayCrushing Belial, PlayOf One Blood, mid-career hits like PlayStepping Outside the Circle and PlayThoughts Without Words, later burners like PlayThe Light That Blinds, PlayThe Power of I and I, PlayIn Effigy, and PlayWhat Drives the Weak, and the new hits like Forevermore, Venomous, and PlayRedemption. It was all amazing.

Overall, this was one concert I won't soon forget. Great night, great music, and a lot of fun. If you missed this, you missed an amazing night of music.

  • The Top Songs of 2006

    6 Jan 2007, 02:12 by AndyChrz

Howdy. If you liked the album list from 4 days ago... this should be up your alley.

This will be nowhere as long as that list though, cause that would pretty much take days to figure out, honestly. The worst part about this is that i'm bound for forget probably a dozen songs... oh well.

And i'll quote myself from last year... The other problem is that i could basically fill up the list with my favorite albums from this year, but that would be silly so i tried to spread it out. That actually eliminatates accuracy somewhat. So here you go.

Here's a list of our "honourable mentions" in no particular order:
    Genghis Tron - Chapels
Set Your Goals - PlayAn Old Book Misread
Bury Your Dead - Let Down Your Hair
Remembering Never - PlayGangsta Rap & Peppermint Schnapps
    Intronaut - PlayGleamer
After the Burial - Fingers Like Daggers
    Verse - Lost
Lye By Mistake - PlayDream as I May, I Feel it, and it's So Wrong
Dead to Fall - All My Heroes Have Failed Me
DragonForce - PlayThrough the Fire and Flames
    Textures - Touching the Absolute
    Capsule - josephine's
    Protest the Hero - PlayNautical
    Unearth - This Glorious Nightmare
Phoenix Mourning - waiting for the king
    Textures - Upwards
The Faceless - Horizons of Chaos I: Oracle of the Onslaught
    Genghis Tron - PlayWarm Woods
Set Your Goals - PlayThis Very Moment
The Esoteric - PlayDestroy, She Said
    Bleeding Through - PlayThe Painkiller
Deathkiller - PlayTake me to your bleeder
Lye By Mistake - Playaboriginal negatives
Between the Buried and Me - Blackened
Protest the Hero - PlayBury the Hatchet
From a Second Story Window - The Crusher
Silent Civilian - PlayLies In The House Of Shame

And the "Top 15 Songs of 2006"
15 - Nasum - PlayX Marks the Spot
I don't know if you can count this. Oh well. Unreleased song and released now, it's freaking awesome and shows how great this grind band was.

    14 - Parkway Drive - Gimme A D
Another one that sort of counts, but it does for me. Awesome way to open up a really really great album. Heavy stuff.

    13 - After the Burial - A Steady Decline
So glad i found this obscure amazing band. So so heavy... i guess this is deathcore? I dunno, but it hits you like a ton of bricks right from the beginning.

12 - The Faceless - All Dark Graves
Boy i love this band. Maybe the song with the most melody on the album but still bruising. I love the time signature changes.

    11 - Ligeia - PlayHeart Attack
Great singing/screaming combo on this metalcore track from a great new band. One of the best hooks of the year for metalcore releases, a standout track on a great record.

    10 - Ankla - DECEIT
SO good. I wish it was longer, but it just pummels you with blazing heaviness for 150 seconds. Gotta love the Brazilian/tribal influences here, it's like Ill Niño if they were still good.

9 - Bury Your Dead - Mirror, Mirror...
I really like that these guys experimented a little, and the electronics in this song are such a cool touch. Makes it very memorable as the album winds down. Fun track to drive with windows down to.

8 - Burn The Shroud - Well Remembered
I'm going to count this as 2006 even though it's on the fence. SUCH a good band, get a record deal already!! If you like From a Second Story Window with harsher vocals, here you go. Eat it.

7 - From a Second Story Window - These Lights Above Us
Standout track on a top 5 album of the year for me. While i miss Sean on the mic, the new vocalist really mixes things up and adds a nice touch to the band. He's got a little more variety, and this is the best song to show it off.

    6 - Set Your Goals - PlayEchoes
What a way to end the album of the year. Sing-songy and DAMN good at it, this band just knows how to write hooks like they've been doing it for 20 years. Instead, the group members are all about 20 years old. Not the last from them...

5 - Kingdom of Sorrow - Buried in Black
Anytime you have Jamey Jasta with a new group trying something interesting, you can bet i'm gonna love it. Think of it as Hatebreed plus Crowbar and you get a skull-fracturing beat and brutal (but fun) chorus. Here's to a full-length record!

    4 - The Faceless - An Autopsy
The best album opener of 2006, by far. Incredible combination of technical guitar work, blazing drums, mind-numbing bass, and crazy synth (yeah really!). Keep up with this song cause you never know where it's headed. Again, so happy i found this band.

    3 - Set Your Goals - PlayMutiny!
MUTINY! I LOVE how this song builds up through the course of three tracks, then crescendos right to this with awesome power and punch. Just thinking about this song makes me want to listen to it about 368 times. Catchiest song of 2006, absolutely, hands down.

2 - Burn The Shroud - Dismembering Heaven
Again, this is such a phenomenal band and i can't believe they're not on a record contract. Somebody sign them. Punishing drumming with pulverizing vocals and guitars give this band so much more energy than ordinary loud music today. Can't wait for more from them soon!

1 - HORSE the band - Pizza Nif
Rarely does a song so far eclipse the rest of the tracks on an album as much as this one, but "Pizza Nif" may be the best HORSE song... EVER. I'm serious. Just when three songs in a row about pizza aren't enough, you get the best pizza song IN THE HISTORY OF MANKIND. It saves the Pizza EP. Go listen to it, people.

  • Top Albums of 2006

    1 Jan 2007, 18:44 by CrazyChris576

It's that time of year again! Yes, indeed, time to give my Top 10 Albums of the Year list. It's been a long year, with a lot of good music put out. So, before we get into the countdown, here's my Honorable Mentions for 2006:

Fallout from the War by Shadows Fall
    Sacrament by Lamb of God
The New Black by Strapping Young Lad
    All Riot by Waterdown
A Matter of Life and Death by Iron Maiden
    Kiss Of Death by Motörhead
    Supremacy by Hatebreed

Right then. And now the countdown!

    10. The Crusade by Trivium
For what it was, this was a pretty solid album in my opinion. Trivium has shed some of their metalcore tendencies in favor of going more towards a traditional thrash sound, which works for them. I know, I know, that's just a nice way of saying they want to be the next Metallica. Big deal. They sound damn good at it, and that puts them on my list.
    Recommended tracks:
#4 PlayAnthem (We Are The Fire)
    #6 PlayAnd Sadness Will Sear
    #7 PlayBecoming The Dragon
    #10 PlayTread The Floods

    9. The Poison by Bullet for My Valentine
Say all you want about Bullet for My Valentine just being a better version of Atreyu. The bottom line is that this is a solid album with some damn good songs. It doesn't take a genius to see that this band is heading for some big recognition in the coming years. I like this album because the band combined some tried-and-true metal techniques with minor elements of hardcore and post-hardcore to make a distinctive, recognizable sound. Kudos to them for standing on principle and not bowing to critics.
    Recommended tracks:
#5 Suffocating Under Words Of Sorrow
    #6 Hit the Floor
    #9 The Poison
    #11 PlayCries in Vain

    8. What Have We Become by Seemless
At first listen, it may sound like Seemless just re-recorded 2003's Seemless and put it out again. But if you give this album more than just one spin, you'll see that this band has come a long way in three years. Jesse David Leach's voice is so much more soulful, and the band's music now has the subtle elements of Southern rock and progressive metal that they were aiming for and missing on the self-titled album. It's a big progression for this band, and I love what they're doing.
    Recommended tracks:
    #3 PlayNumb
    #4 PlayEyes Of A Child
    #6 PlaySeven
    #8 PlayMaintain

    7. Define the Great Line by Underoath
Underoath has come a long way since 2004's They're Only Chasing Safety, and anyone who says otherwise hasn't listened to this album as attentively as they should. Gone are Underoath's past tendencies towards whiny singing countered by completely overdone screaming. They have achieved a fine balance on this new record, and have perfected their technique so the singing sounds more meaningful and the screaming less strained. The changes this band made to improve their sound are phenomenal, and after seven years of doing some of the same stuff over and over again, I give them major props for making the adjustments they needed to make for this album.
    Recommended tracks:
#3 PlayThere Could Be Nothing After This
    #4 PlayYou're Ever So Inviting
    #6 PlayReturning Empty Handed
#10 PlayEveryone Looks So Good From Here

    6. Saints by Destroy The Runner
If this album was put out by a band that had been in the industry for four or five years, I would have said it was a great album. For a band to put this out as their debut album is simply unbelievable. Destroy the Runner may not have the name recognition they need to get to the top, but if they continue to put out material like this, they will surely get that recognition very quickly. The vocals on this album are incredibly powerful, and the music is very well-played and leaves a lasting impression on you. Mark my words, keep your eyes on this band, because they're on their way.
    Recommended tracks:
    #2 PlayMy Darkness
    #6 PlayThe Aleph
    #10 PlaySound Of Reason
    #12 PlayPallbearer

    5. Karmacode by Lacuna Coil
I expected nothing less than near-perfection on this album, and Lacuna Coil did not disappoint. The band's evolution since 2002's Comalies is astounding, showing just how versatile they can be. This album moves at a much faster pace than their previous work, keeping you engaged and active in the listening process. The music is heavier, the lyrics are more powerful, and the band is simply unstoppable at this point.
    Recommended tracks:
    #1 PlayFragile
    #5 PlayDevoted
    #9 PlayCloser
    #11 PlayThe Game

    4. Come Clarity by In Flames
I have to say, this is a nice recovery from 2004's Soundtrack to Your Escape. I don't know what it was that convinced In Flames that they needed to go back to their roots, but they did it well with this album. The thing that makes this album so good is that they found a way to integrate their older death metal sound with their new melodic tendencies, allowing this album to appeal to their entire fan base. I just hope they continue this trend in the future, because it is what will keep this band alive for many more years to come.
    Recommended tracks:
    #4 PlayDead End
    #8 PlayPacing Death's Trail
    #9 PlayCrawl Through Knives
    #10 PlayVersus Terminus

    3. As Daylight Dies by Killswitch Engage
HA! Fooled you all, didn't I? You thought this was going to be #1 didn't you? Well, the fact that this album is #3 on my list is not a sign that this album is anything short of phenomenal, because it is, in a word, phenomenal. Some people say that this album is just 2004's The End of Heartache re-hashed with a fancy new cover, but they're totally wrong, because I know what went into making this album. Remember, I'm the guy who interviewed Mike D., and he's the one that told me just how incredibly different this album is from "The End of Heartache". The band has moved from being straight metalcore with melodies to being a complete metal band, mixing parts of Southern rock, thrash, hardcore, and good old-fashioned heavy metal into their sound. Don't underestimate this album. Give it a listen, and it will blow your expectations out of the water.
    Recommended tracks:
    #2 PlayThis Is Absolution
    #5 PlayMy Curse
    #8 PlayEye of the Storm
    #11 PlayReject Yourself

    2. III: In The Eyes Of Fire by Unearth
Nothing in the world could have prepared me for the onslaught that this record brings. In the two years since The Oncoming Storm was released, Unearth has found the sound that is totally theirs to own. They take their music, mount it on a golf tee in your mouth, and then smash it into your head with a sledgehammer. This record will send you crying to your mother if you aren't prepared for its brutality, so be ready. Unearth is bringing the ruckus with this record, and not looking back.
    Recommended tracks:
    #1 This Glorious Nightmare
    #2 Giles
    #6 This Time Was Mine
    #7 Unstoppable

    1. The Fall of Ideals by All That Remains
The reason why this record is #1 on my list is because it is, in a word, perfect. There's no other way to describe it besides that. All That Remains went from being just another blip on the map with 2004's This Darkened Heart, to becoming one of the most powerful, influential, and sought-after metal bands with this new record. The record shows just how versatile this band can be, with its wonderful mixture of electrifying screams and beautiful melodies, as well as blending searing thrash speed with doom-like slowness. This record just makes you want more, more, more, until you're totally immersed in its power. In short: buy this album. You won't regret, I promise you.
    Recommended tracks:
    #1 PlayThis Calling
    #2 Not Alone
    #3 It Dwells In Me
#8 PlayThe Air That I Breathe

And that, folks, is that. Happy 2007 to you. May this new year bring you all sorts of amazing new music to destroy your eardrums.

Another milestone number in the books......35,000 came and went today, with PlayFalling Again. I must say, between 25,000 and 35,000, I had several artists go racing up the charts with astonishing speed.
